If you’re anything like us, when you hear Van Gogh, you think Starry Night and sliced-off ears. When in Amsterdam, head to the Van Gogh Museum to get to know more about his life, and prepare to be dazzled by his best works, featured here.
Van Gogh viewed this painting as proof that he could be a good figure painter. He wanted to depict peasants as they really were, and deliberately chose ugly models.
Born in the Netherlands, Van Gogh moved to Arles, France in later years, seeking refuge from drinking. He painted his bedroom in his home, the Yellow House, while recovering from an illness.
The post-impressionist artist created two series of sunflowers for the purpose of decorating a room in the Yellow House for his fellow painter and friend, Gauguin.
Van Gogh struggled with mental illness, and painted irises while living in an asylum in France before his death in 1890. He brought emotion to life in his flowers and still lifes.
Van Gogh painted a series of the view from over the wheatfield from the window of the asylum: the scene after a storm, with a reaper, in autumn, and with spring flowers.
Located in Museum Square in Amsterdam, the Van Gogh Museum holds the largest collection of his paintings and drawings. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum shows many of Van Gogh’s impressionist and post-impressionist contemporaries. There’s also a café, and a shop where you can pick up prints of the artist’s best works.
The Van Gogh Museum is open daily from 9am to 7pm, until 10pm on Fridays and 9pm on Saturdays.
Admission starts at 17€ per person. When it comes to learning about Van Gogh’s life and seeing his lively brushstrokes up close and personal, this is a can't-miss experience.
Michael was a great tour guide for both the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. It really helped that we used an audio system. We never missed anything that was said. He also had all the tickets for us so we didn’t have to wait in line. You could tell he had a great passion for the subjects. We spent just enough time everywhere. The walk down to get on the boat was nice to stretch our legs. Loved the boat ride and being able to hear the audio available in many languages. I would definitely recommend this tour to get a quick taste of Amsterdam in a day.
The venue and the art itself of course are amazing. The storytelling behind the man and the way the gallery is set up is well done. The visitors need help passing by the works during peak hours, however, lots of issues with those unfamiliar with gallery "flow." Also, not sure why the lighting on the main floor is so poor for the works themselves - lots of glare off of glass, ineffective in showing the work in the work... Would recommend visiting during off peak hours. The Get Your Guide people were great, however, as were museum staff!
Our guide (Hank) walked us right into the museum with no wait, he was well known by the museum staff. The original meeting place was a little unclear because we did the know the area, and it was about 300 yards from the entrance. But having an exclusive and experienced tour guide like Hank gave us enormous information and insight in a short period of time. For us it was worth the expense!
An amazing collection of Vincent Van Gogh’s whole life from his birth to his tragic end. Very well displayed with good explanations. The audio guide was definitely worth paying for, explaining a lot . We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The shop has a wide of Van Gogh themed items across a range of prices.
This was my second time visiting Amsterdam and using the iAmsterdam card. It was really easy to get around via public transportation with the card. It also included free tours/discounts on many of the must visit places. This is definitely highly recommended to get around when visiting Amsterdam.
