Full description
Visit the former Nazi concentration camps at Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau on this 7-hour trip from Krakow. By June 1940, Jews and over 700 political criminals had been sent to Auschwitz and the atrocities had begun. Birkenau was built by Auschwitz prisoners and by October 1941 was used as an extermination camp. Between 1 and 1.5 million were killed, and approximately 90 percent of those killed were Jews. Before Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated in January 1945, the SS attempted to blow up the camp and destroy the documentation. They were only partially successful, and the Polish government decided to restore the site as a memorial to the victims.

It was a nice trip. The drivers were very nice, the car and the bus were also comfortable. I was picked up at my hotel by a van and then transferred to a bus. We took a one and a half hour to reach the camp. In the camp, we were given a pair of headset to listen to the a lady that explain all the things that took place there. The headest were to be only used in the first camp. In the second camp, we were not given anything, hence we have to get closer to the guide to hear her. We were given 15 minutes break between each sessions and a one hour break after the second part of the tour. I suggest you to take all the photos you want while you are being explained by the guide, since there will be no time afterwards to explore the camp by yourself. After the tour ended we traveled with the same bus and then separated between those who go directly to the city and those who continue their tour to the salt mine. The only negative thing about this tour is the smell of the free bathroom.

We had a wonderful day, we where picked up outside our Apartment by a lovely driver and taken to Auschwitz. After arriving we where given our tickets and entered the museum. We had a really good English guide who we felt was quite passionate about the camp and we felt she took her time to explain everything. After the tour our lovely driver dropped us off at our apartment.

Four of us went on the day tour to Auschwitz with KrakowDirect, travelling on a minibus with others, having been picked up at a meeting point close to our accommodation. From start to finish the tour went smoothly, with our personable driver explaining clearly the logistics of the day. We met our Auschwitz guide there. She led us around Auschwitz I and II (with a short break in the middle for a quick lunch at the excellent cafeteria). Her commentary was interesting, easy to understand and concise, conveying the horror of what took place there without manipulating our emotions. Not an easy job - 10/10.
