Vienna: Spanish Riding School Training

1. Vienna: Spanish Riding School Training

Visit the Spanish Riding School of Vienna and observe the horses during their training. In the magnificent setting of the baroque Winter Riding Academy, the training offers an insight into the years of training of the Lipizzaners and their riders. The morning exercise of the horses is accompanied by classical Viennese music. The Training includes relaxation exercises, refining and perfecting movement, and strengthening certain muscles. The famous school jumps levade, courbette, and capriole, which are shown as part of the performances by the Spanish Riding School, are not practiced on a daily basis and can only sometimes be seen during the morning exercise. The white Lipizzaner stallions are put through their paces by their riders almost every day. The primary objective of the morning exercise is to maintain the horses’ athleticism and health, as well as to build up various muscle groups that are necessary for performing the exercises of the haute école.

These performances are the result of years of training for the rider and their Lipizzans. The Spanish riding school is the only institution in the world which has practiced classical equitation in the Renaissance tradition of the Haute Ecole for more than 450 years. The Spanish Riding School presents its most important exercises of the range of the High School — as usual, in highest elegance and harmony — among others the "Pas de Deux" or the world-famous Schools Above the Ground, which could include a capriole or levade. Professor Günter Seifert presents a typical Viennese repertoire: from the Waltz Song of Johann Strauß II "Out there in Sieveringthe lilac is blooming already," the "Chineser Galop" by Johann Strauß I, the "Jubelwalzer" by Joseph Lanner, to the "Radetzky March," one of the most famous marches in the world, which traditionally concludes every New Year’s concert and has a highly symbolic meaning for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Overall the pass was a wonderful option allowing us to decide what to see and when. The staff was wonderful and very helpful and provided some ideas on getting around which attractions were close to each other. The only thing I would say is make sure on day of arrival get there early to get your pass. We got there the day before but about an hour after 12 so we could not get our passes.

It has been a dream of mine to see these beautiful horses and I was not disappointed. Their skill, and that of the riders, was so impressive.

Really impressive tour! Definitely worth a visit if you are interested in horses and history.

A beautiful setting to see the incredibly trained horses perform . Do get a seat if possible.

Very easy guide to use helps you get the best of your stay.!!!
