Mauthausen Concentration Camp in Upper Austria was one of the largest labor camp complexes in the Third Reich. Between 1938 and 1945 about 200,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned in Mauthausen. About half of them lost their lives. Very interesting trip. Sad to see how man can be cruel to other men for their own ends.Have been to other camps and this one is as bad and cruel as the others. Would incourage everyone to see one of these camps at least once in their lifetime. This should never be allowed to happen again.

Our guide, Fleming, was amazing. The drive was full of incredible history. Our guide was clearly incredibly knowledgable. Mauthausen was tragic. The museum was incredibly well done and the audio tour was also very good. It was perfect to have the audio tour because it is definitely a place you want to move at your own pace and not be rushed with a group so you have time to process everything. Our guide answered all our questions as a follow up on the way home. On our way home our guide asked if we wanted to have lunch or skip a sit down and drive home through the Wachau Valley...which we immediately said yes to—which was a beautiful scenic drive home. We really appreciated our guide’s flexibility, kindness and knowledge!

The experience was emotionally stirring. At Mauthausen, the audio guide and the signs along the way are very helpful. There are shocking remnants of the horror. The are some "sanitized" areas which allow one to imagine the hideous conditions, to reflect on one's own personal connection to the Holocaust and to consider today's evidence of a recurring antisemitism as well as the suffering of unwanted immigrants worldwide. The experience was immensely enhanced by the immeasurable knowledge imparted by our guide, Fleming. He was thorough educatingnus about the historic background leading to the Holocaust. The documentary shown en route also prepared the group for the visit to the concentration camp. Fleming was sensitive to each of our experience during the day, as it is a gripping excursion, and only to ready to answer all questions. I recommend this tour to anyone interested in exploring this difficult subject.
