Full description

You will start this tour from the meeting point located in Ushuaia city and then depart towards Tierra Mayor Valley. Once at the beginning of the path, you will start your 3-hour hike towards Emerald Lagoon. Most of the year the ground is humid, which gives a medium difficulty to the trek. Enjoy a path covered with dense native forests and streams (over 5 miles with a cumulative elevation gain of 580 ft.). Emerald Lagoon is hidden and located at the foot of the Ojo de Albino glacier, between Cerro Bonete and Cordón Toribio. It is an excellent place for spotting foxes, condors, and beavers. Once arrive to the shore, marvel at the turquoise water while you take a break. The colors that mix between the emerald green of its waters and the coppery red of the peat bogs, added to the other, greens, and browns of the mountains that enclose it and the albino white of the glacier achieve a visual charm and a wonderful chromatic amplitude. At the end of the tour, enjoy a quiet dinner in a charming cabin overlooking the Tierra Mayor valley while the sun slowly goes down. Return to Ushuaia is estimated at around 10 PM.

After a short drive from Ushuaia, we started the trek in the forest. Trek was very easy, it’s the only ‘commercial’ trek in the area, very popular with locals - difficulty level 2/10. We went on a Thu afternoon and it wasn’t too crowded but on weekend it gets crazy. On the way back we walked through a muddy area to see ‘the real Patagonian forest’. That’s great but I’d prefer to come back on the same route and stay clean. Dinner was served in a small hut with a fireplace and toilet (no water or soap) - a lentil dish that was really tasty. Trip was enjoyable thanks to fellow travellers from all over the world, I went on two more tours with one of the couple I met here.

It's a long trek ( if you are not a trekker) and requires waterproof boots, most of the trek is on damp and Marsh soli. The alternative you are offered of cheap rubber boots is not very good. The ones my wife used were ruptured and they don't give you a good support. You will need trekking poles, but they are provided by the operator. Other than these operating issues it was very nice trek with very beautiful scenary.

The trek to Laguna will remain a highlight of our stay in Ushuaia. We were picked up on time, then when we arrived at the starting point, boots and trekking poles were given to us as well as a delicious picnic. After a few safety instructions, we started our trek to La Laguna Esmeralda supervised by our two super guides: David and Thomas who were not stingy with explanations of the flora and fauna along the way. Then finally the arrival at the lake, true beauty of nature, flanked between rocky bars like a jewel in its case! A great moment of emotion that we will remember for a long time.
