Why you’ll love this…
  • The rural towns and fishing villages of Fuerteventura offer a glimpse into real Canarian culture
  • The fairytale-like village of Betancuria is brimming with history, like it's Gothic-style church
  • There's a chance to taste locally made goats cheese and honey rum, plus visit an Aloe Vera farm
  • You'll see Aztec designs, like moons, suns and snakes carved in the arch of Pajara's village church
  • Your local expert guide will show you sea caves, black-sand beaches and more on this full-day tour
What to expect

Stroll through timeworn village plazas and into pretty colonial churches, investigate sea caves and learn about typical produce. Between stops you'll visit lofty viewpoints to admire Fuerteventura's unusually stark landscape. It may look barren but Marta, one of our expert guides, says, ‘There are 44 different bird species found on Fuerteventura, despite the lack of trees. That's only four fewer than on the forested island of Madeira.'

You'll start the day learning about one of the island's best-known products at an aloe vera farm. Find out how it's become an excellent all-rounder in the wellbeing world. We'll then head to Pajara to visit Nuestra Señora de la Regla church to admire its standout Aztec-looking façade. Marta adds, ‘Pajara was once voted the sixth most beautiful village in Spain. It oozes charm.' Drive next to the tiny west-coast fishing village of Ajuy, where you can explore its black-sand beach and sea caves in chalk cliffs. It's on to Betancuaria next, with a photo stop along the way to overlook the parched mountains and the ocean at the Las Peñitas viewpoint.

Step back in time in Betancuria with a chance to see the church of Santa María – the oldest in the Canaries – which was consecrated in 1424, or take a visit to the archaeological museum and view some interesting exhibitions. Then it's on to a family-run restaurant in Valle de Santa Ines for a lunch made from locally sourced ingredients. And to round off the day, we'll visit a goat farm and sample local cheeses as well as local jams and honey rum liqueur – a Fuerteventura favourite.

Coach was on time and comfortable. Stop-offs were generally underwhelming and lunch was poor (there was also no choice - and wine was dreadful). While the guide gave good information, she spoke too quickly and without seeming to care about what she was saying. She also was not very personable; a good guide looks like they want to be there, and smiles.

It would have been better if the English commentary wasn’t always last. It was difficult to put the commentary to the sights as we had always already driven past them before hearing about them.

Tour and guide itself was lovely, we visited parts of the island we wouldn’t have had the chance to see otherwise, the village we went to was beautiful. Unfortunately the biggest let down was the food for us - the restaurant choice was extremely poor, with terrible cold food and rude staff - and as a vegetarian I was offered a side salad. I also think it would be important to tell people in advance of the physicality of the trip, we were not aware of just how physically demanding the cave was

The trip was very informative, spoken in two languages. Everyone was very prompt on the departure times and our guide made sure everyone knew the time and location of the bus to pick us up as not possible for bus to always wait where we were dropped off. Guide was very helpful and friendly.

Too much squashed into this trip which meant everything was time sensitive. Like being regimented. Tina the guide was effortlessly fluent and knowledgable but I think it would make more sense to have just one language per coach. Tina didn’t stop talking the entire time in English and German and told us off if we spoke while she was speaking. The constant narration in 2 languages for 7 hours was enough to give you a headache.

The places we visited were very interesting and the guide gave a comprehensive overview of all the places that we stopped at and along the journey in the coach. The only problem for us was the trip was sold to us as an English trip when it turned out to be a German trip with English guests. All the commentary from the guide started in German and then English, this was a problem when we viewed places of interest from the coach by the time we got the commentary place was long gone
