Full description

Venture into the wilderness and experience the Arctic wilderness on a guided snowmobile tour and visit the Tromsø Ice Domes.

Meet in the city center of Tromsø, and travel to the wilderness center in Camp Tamok, located about 90 minutes outside of the city. Upon arrival at the center, you will be provided with state-of-the-art snowmobiling suits and helmets.

Begin with a thorough safety introduction and practical demonstration. You don't need any previous skills to drive a snowmobile, all you need is a normal physical condition. You will be driving in pairs, one driver and one passenger on each snowmobile, with the opportunity to switch places during the trip. The tour will bring you past scenic mountains and through the dramatic snow-covered Finn Valley.

Ride on the snowmobiling track for approximately 2 hours, depending on the weather and snow conditions. After the snowmobiling part of the tour, visit the Ice Domes where the ice bar, ice cinema, ice suites, and ice restaurant have themes ranging from local Sami culture to the Northern Lights conveyed through beautiful colored lighting and wonderful ice sculptures.

At the Ice Domes, join a guided tour and learn about the construction process of the ice hotel and the impact the snow has on the survival of arctic animals. There will be time to walk around freely and ask the experienced guide questions, as well as admire the unique snow and ice art carved by professional artists. A non-alcoholic ice shot at the stunning ice bar is complimentary. During this tour, pay a visit to the small herd of reindeer located at the Ice Domes for feeding time, before heading back to Tromsø.

A nice experience, but went too slow in column driving. I wish the snowmobile ride was much longer. It was fun to be able to ride fast on the scooter in open land when it was not driving in a column. The ice domes were exciting to look at, the guide was very good at telling the story behind the construction of the domes and the design of the statues. You had plenty of time to look around alone in the different rooms. The lunch in the lavvo was perfectly ok.

Everything has wonderful fkt. First the pick up and then the drive to the camp. There we found out that in the event of an accident you have to pay 6,000 kroner (600 euros) for damage, but you can easily secure this by paying 150 kroner (15 euros) with a card on the spot. Then you get really cool equipment from the team: helmet, very warm thermal suit, boots, balaclava and gloves. -> I still recommend two pairs of socks and two pairs of gloves (preferably light/thin ones that you can easily pull under a second pair). The team then gives a short introduction to controlling the snowmobile. I have to admit that I was terrified of those things. I didn't want to drive alone and I didn't want to be at the front either :) and what happened? I was allowed to ride alone and right behind our guide, BUT. it was the best thing that could have happened to me. After 2 minutes I got the hang of it and when everyone changed after 1/2 of the route, I was allowed to continue driving.

Snowmobiling was SO much fun! Great team, too. Ice Domes visit was ok - interesting to know how they build these structures, but too much time spent visiting them. Only so much time you can spend in there! Biggest issue with this tour (and others we took) was the catering (lunch). Food not good, and very disorganised. Think the team feel they need to do this, to offer value for money, but they really don’t need to do this. Especially as food is their weak-spot. People will still be happy to pay for the snowmobiling, which is awesome!
