From Trieste: Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle

1. From Trieste: Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle

Postojna Cave, the queen of all caves, is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world’s largest karst (limestone) monuments. This is the only place in the world where the underground landscape can be traversed on an electric train and where you get to meet this underground kingdom’s most famous inhabitant – the proteus (olm) – up close.  A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries, and halls, an astonishing diversity of karst features, as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for the popularity of the cave and the large number of visitors (more than 36 million of them in over 200 years). The Predjama Castle reigns over the surrounding area, not far from the Postojna Cave, in the idyllic village of Predjama. This picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious, and impregnable castle has been perched up in the middle of a vertical 123-meter high cliff for more than 800 years. Its romantic appeal is further emphasized by the idyllic Lokva River, which disappears into the underground world deep down below the castle. As the only preserved cave castle in Europe, the Predjama Castle offers a unique insight into the building techniques and resourcefulness of people in the Middle Ages, who were looking for and found a safe harbor for themselves right at the entrance of the cave. During a siege that took place in the 15th century, the castle provided a refuge for its best-known and most notorious owner – Erazem of Predjama.  The legend of the courageous robber baron Erazem, who remained undefeated until one of his servants betrayed him, is still in people’s minds, inspiring and alluring as ever. It was this safe abode of his that helped the brave knight resist the besiegers without much difficulty for more than a year. Let your guide take you through these unforgettable sights for an ideal day excursion.

You will begin your discovery into the well-kept and bubbly secret of this town, which is considered the gem of this region. Throughout your tour you will have the chance to discover this under-explored region, hearing all about the history of Prosecco and appreciating the area's most historically significant vineyards. This will be followed by a visit to an exceptional winery where you'll try some of the most renowned sparkling wine in all of Italy. Your tour will carry on to the medieval village of Štanjel, which was one of the first communities in the Karst Region. It is loved for its ancient village center and its awe-inspiring sweeping vistas. Štanjel sits atop a scenic hill, from where you can easily see some its most famous structures. The village has changed in appearance over the centuries, but has always maintained the spirit of the Karst. The town gets its name from the Patron Saint, Daniel, which provides it with an interesting cultural heritage. During both world wars, Štanjel was uniquely influenced by a particular architect and mayor at the time, Maks Fabiani. He preserved the essence of the village whilst using his creative finesse to rejuvenate the newly-renovated public structures. Fabiani’s most notable work in Štanjel involved the restoration of Ferrari Villa and the design of the extraordinary Ferrari Garden park, lauded as the most significant park landscaping in Slovenia from the inter-war period. Throughout the tour, you will also get the opportunity to try local delights of the Karst region, including dry-cured ham, cheese and local wine.

Had so much fun on our trip, could not recommend enough. Truly felt as though we were able to experience Slovenia in the short amount of time there. The one con is that GetYourGuide overcharged us for our trip. I did not look into this until after, but if you book directly on KoperTrips, the company they used, it is only 95 euros as opposed to 113 euros on GetYourGuide. In the end, we paid about 40 euros more (for two people) through GetYourGuide. Also, it was difficult when communicating about the trip as when a question arose GetYourGuide had to contact KoperTrips, as opposed to booking with KoperTrips and communicating with them directly. If I were to do it again, I would not have purchased through GetYourGuide. I have used GetYourGuide for multiple excursions and the price is usually the same and if anything maybe a couple dollars more, however, I randomly started searching for other trips KoperTrips has to offer and saw the price difference. Very bummed to say the least!

Visits of the castle and caves beyond expectations, and the transport from Trieste to Predjama / Postojna really practical with our guide Boris, welcoming and helpful. An opportunity/stop not to be missed for those visiting Trieste even just for a weekend; in addition to the beauty of the visit, the timing required for the tour outside the border (from 9 to 1430) also leaves room for visiting Trieste in the afternoon

Incredible tour! Natasha was a phenomenal guide and provided so much fascinating history about Slovenia and the locations we went. I wish we had a little more time in Lake Bled, but overall the day was perfectly paced!

The trip was great. We enjoyed exploring both sites. The castle has electronic guide so you can progress at your own pace. The cave has a person that leads you through the cave.

A very interesting program and precise organization.
