From Berlin: Half-Day Sachsenhausen Memorial Walking Tour

1. From Berlin: Half-Day Sachsenhausen Memorial Walking Tour

Take a trip to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and learn about a somber but important chapter in Germany's history. Constructed in 1936 by the SS, it was built to detain all opposition to the Nazi regime. After meeting your guide in Berlin, hop on a train to Oranienburg, approximately 25 minutes outside of Berlin. Arrive at Sachsenhausen Memorial Site after a 30-minute stroll from the train station.  Start your guided experience at the Camp Administration Center, now an on-site museum, but formerly the base for overseeing the Third Reich’s 32 main camps and 1000+ satellite camps.  As you tour the site, find out from your guide about what conditions were like inside the camp, the infamous ‘Death March’ ahead of the camp’s liberation in 1945, and how the camp was used by the Soviets afterward.  Listen to stories of revolt by Jewish prisoners in 1942, defiance by British prisoners of war, and sabotage by Soviet and Polish prisoners.  Hear first-hand about the people there: different prisoner groups, their fates, and familiar names imprisoned in the camp, including Stalin’s son.  After the tour, be accompanied by your guide back to the center of Berlin.  Sites that might be visited on the tour include the following:  • Camp Administration Center (formerly the Concentration Camps Inspectorate) • Station Z • Watchtower • Commandant's House • Jewish Barracks • Punishment Cells • Pathology Laboratory • Infirmary • Special Camp 1/7 • SS Training Camp • Gallows

Passing by the Nikolaiviertel, the Rotes Rathaus, and St. Mary's Church, head to Berlin Cathedral, which houses the impressive Hohenzollern Crypt. You’ll also see the remains of Goebbels’ Propaganda Ministry, which is now part of the Federal Ministry of Labor, before reaching the memorial to Georg Elser, who meticulously planned but failed to bomb Hitler in the Bürgerbräukeller in Munich. You’ll then end this section of the tour at the Topography of Terror, situated at the former Gestapo headquarters, where the SS leadership and the Reich Security Head Office were located. The tour then continues by bus, exploring the division of the city after 1961. Sachsenhausen tour is very educational and emotional as everybody can surely imagine. But it is actually the tour guide who transformers you from the present to the past and makes this place of terror really authentic. Our guide Chris - Canadian young gentleman - has delivered an exceptional experience ( One of the few top quality guided tours we attended in Berlin). Firstly, we learnt significantly more than we expected and it was clear that we could continue for endless hours to learn more and more. Secondly, Chris's passion for history and passing it onto next generation is simply admirable and also contagious! Lastly, Chris's humour also greatly contributed to a fabulous memorable tour. Definitely recommend for everybody visiting Berlin! I would actually say it is a 'Must do' that helps you to see a human being and life from different perspective! Thank you so much!

After doing the Third Reich tour the day previously, our expectations were just as high as we knew we'd get a good guide. And we got a guide that was even better than good in Jim. With little knowledge between me and my partner, Jim was great and showed so much passion in his delivery which had me gasping at times. similar to Eran our other guide, I couldn't reccomend Jim enough. Jim was approachable and the passion was very clearly present and similarly, we could have spent so many more hours listening and taking it all in from Jim.

This tour is highly recommended. It is a varied tour, with walking and public transportation. Our guide, Josh, told personal stories in addition to the historical facts which made it extra interesting.

Cian was awesome! I am absolutely recommending this tour to anyone interested in this history. Completely worth the time.

Really great tour, Hannah was an excellent tour guide who really takes you into the history.
