Full description

Indulge the art-lover in you at the Mauritshuis, home to the best of Dutch paintings from the Golden Age. Explore one of the most iconic buildings in the Hague, located next to the Parliament. Look out of its windows for a view of the pond.  Discover the art museum's compact, yet world-renowned collection. See more than 200 masterpieces such as Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring", "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp" by Rembrandt, "The Goldfinch" by Fabritius, and "The Bull" by Potter on permanent display.

Appreciate the collection's rich variety, with genre paintings by Jan Steen, landscapes by Jacob van Ruisdael, still lifes by Adriaen Coorte, and portraits by Rubens. Admire the 17th-century monument's historic yet intimate interior, with its silken wall coverings, sparkling chandeliers, and monumental painted ceilings.

Stay as long as you wish and visit the museum at your own pace. Allow around 1.5 hours, which is the average visit duration. Visit the restaurant and coffee shop, purchase some souvenirs, or visit the temporary exhibition.

Vrel, Forerunner of Vermeer Almost everyone knows Johannes Vermeer’s quiet interiors and that little street he painted, but few people know that artist Jacobus Vrel (active c. 1640-1660) was already producing scenes of this kind before the paint was dry on Vermeer’s first masterpiece. The Mauritshuis shares the story of this mysterious painter in Vrel – Forerunner of Vermeer. The exhibition - from 16 February until 29 March 2023 - will tell the story of how Vrel was rediscovered in the 19th and early 20th century using a selection of his finest works. Two extraordionary paintings from the famous Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna will be coming to The Hague. One is Woman at the Window (1654), the only dated work by Vrel. This exhibition can also be visited in Paris, Fondation Custodia, 17 June 2023 – 17 September 2023.

A visit to the exhibition is worthwhile for "The Girl with the Pearl Earring" alone. For me, this work is even more impressive than the Mona Lisa. But there was also something special about seeing the original Rembrandt works. As an exhibition space, the Mauritshuis itself offers a wonderfully adequate setting for the pictures. A very nice highlight of The Hague Tour and highly recommended.

This is a small museum in a beautiful mansion. The paintings are of the highest quality - Vermeer's "Girl With a Pearl Earring," Rembrandt's stunning final self portrait, Fabritius' "The Goldfinch," along with Rubens, Van Dyck, and greatest masters of still life. More masterpiece's per square foot than any other museum. Just gorgeous.

Basically, the visit to the museum was interesting. Unfortunately, the booked audio guide didn't work. It would also have been nicer if so many school classes hadn't run around stressed out and in between. Special dates for school classes would certainly be more pleasant for the students and other visitors.
