Hobart: Hastings Caves, Tahune Airwalk, and Huon Valley Tour

1. Hobart: Hastings Caves, Tahune Airwalk, and Huon Valley Tour

Spend a day in the natural surroundings of Southern Tasmania on a guided day trip from Hobart, with all entry fees and hotel transfers included. Drive through the scenic Huon Valley, explore the expansive Hastings Caves, swim in thermal springs, and walk above the forest canopy on the Tahune Airwalk. Leaving Hobart, embark on a 2-hour drive and see the orchards of the Huon Valley that gave Tasmania its nickname of "apple isle". Drive through the winding roads of the Deep South as you head to your first destination, Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs. Upon arrival at the Hastings Visitor Centre, walk down into the rainforest, adoring the magnificent ferns along the way. Warm up with a 15 to 20-minute dip in a thermal pool that is fed by natural springs. Then, head underground with a specialist guide to explore the largest dolomite cave open to visitors in Australia. See spectacular stalactites, columns, shawls, and stalagmites. While the cave has no narrow passages, there are 250 stairs with handrails leading in and out of the cave. If you prefer not to enter the cave, you can stay outside to spend time in the forest while your travel companions are on the 45-minute cave tour. Next, explore more of the Huon Valley as you wind through the countryside toward Tahune Adventures. Make a stop at the historic Kermandie Hotel which has been the heart of Port Huon since 1932. Enjoy a delicious lunch (at your expense) with spectacular views over a private marina on the Huon River. Alternatively, there is a café that sells delicious home-made pies a short distance from The Kermandie, please let your tour guide know if you would prefer to purchase lunch from the café and they will take you there after dropping guests at The Kermandie. We will return to The Kermandie where you can enjoy your lunch outside (please note you cannot take food purchased elsewhere into the restaurant). After lunch, venture into the forest at Tahune, walking among the treetops on the Tahune Airwalk – a steel canopy that overlooks the forest floor 30 meters below. Conquer your fear as you cross the river on a swinging bridge. Follow the Huon Pine Trail to see and smell one of Australia’s oldest living trees. Find out how fire has affected the forest and see the natural regeneration that occurs in a forest environment first-hand. Finally, sit back and relax as you make your way back and reach Hobart by about 5:30 PM.

From Hobart: Full-Day Tahune Airwalk & Hastings Caves Tour

2. From Hobart: Full-Day Tahune Airwalk & Hastings Caves Tour

You will travel south of Hobart into the great Southern Forests, through the picturesque Huon Valley, famous for its apple orchards, hence Tasmania being called The Apple Isle. Go along the beautiful Huon River and walk through the tree tops suspended 40 m high above the ground, then further south you'll delve 40 m underground into the vast chambers of a cave tour. The first major adventure is to explore the Tahune Forest Airwalk, beginning along the Cantilever stretching for 597 m through the treetops. Enjoy the sensation of being suspended above the Huon River with breathtaking views across the treetops and surrounding mountains. Back on the forest floor you can take on a longer walk (1 hour) to experience the “Swinging Bridges”, crossing both the Picton and Huon rivers. With a 50 m span across the rivers, this is a thrilling experience and makes for fabulous photos. For a more gentle experience there is the easy 20 minute enchanting Huon Pine Walk where these famous and unique local trees grow alongside the river, some as old as 2000 years. Heading south, you'll enjoy a number of easy walks, fabulous scenery and lookouts along the way.The Hastings Cave Reserve is another spectacular place to enjoy a variety of activities, and soak up the atmosphere. Bring your swimming gear and jump into the Thermal Springs swimming pool where the water is always 28 degrees, fed by the naturally heated waters of the thermal springs nearby. Relax in the beautiful forest surrounds or wander the Hot Springs Nature Trail where the warm water meets the cool water, home to the humorous and playful platypus. Then it's time to head underground to explore the spectacular Hastings Caves which are Australia’s largest tourist dolomite caves, expertly shown by the National Parks & Wildlife Guides. The cave temperature is always 9 degrees so bring your jumper along. The return to Hobart takes around 1.5 hours with a few short stops along the way. During the summer months there is ample opportunity to collect delicious local cherries, berries and apples on the way back. This is a fun, diverse and relaxed day out, and you'll return to Hobart around 18:00.

The caves are amazing. The thermal springs was not what I expected and we were pressed for time....this needs an hour to make it worthwhile. Bus driver friendly and informative. Its a long day but well worth it.

Great tour guide - Hastings Cave tour was fascinating followed by delicious lunch and sky walk/river dip in beautiful forest setting at Tahune.
