Full description
Europe’s highest active volcano is studied extensively by scientists and is popular with trekkers and nature lovers as well. Visit Mount Etna and the clifftop village of Taormina on this 11-hour excursion from Palermo. From Crateri Silvestri you’ll take the funicular with a local mountain guide all the way up to 2,500 meters above sea level. From this point you’ll experience unforgettable panoramic views. Just south of Taormina is the nature reserve of Isola Bella, and further south you’ll see the popular seaside resort of Giardini Naxos. Visit the village of Taormina, a 45-minute drive from Mount Etna. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea, the village features an ancient Greek theater, many old churches, antique shops, lively bars and fine restaurants.

Little feedback. Pick-up at our hotel at 06:00 a.m. and grouping with the other participants for a coach departure at 06:45 a.m. We arrived in Sapienza at 10:00 a.m., the road is more than 3 hours long. Arrive on site 2 hours free, we opt for the cable car (30 euros per person) which takes you to 2500 meters, the view is breathtaking. You can choose to climb the rest on foot or a jeep will take you there for an additional 30 euros . Return to the coach at 12:30 p.m. for the departure to Traormine, 1 hour by road. Little time on site, too short to enjoy it and return to Palermo at 8:30 p.m. after 3:30 a.m. by bus. All in all the experience is worth the detour, the simple fact of going up on Etna justifies the price of the excursion. I strongly recommend, but be aware that the day will be very long and a lot of transport in reality.

Great day, just be prepared for lots of driving. When booking it would not give me the option to enter my hotel pick up location which caused some anxiety as I wasn't sure I was being picked up or not, however I was contacted the day before the trip and was told that I would be picked up. When we got to Mt Etna we were all told we had 90mins to which we all agreed. I came back to the van after exploring Mt Etna for 90mins, however there were two people from our group that never returned. We waited in the carpark for over an hour which caused lots of anger for all involved. The tour guide (Sebastian) did everything he could have possibly done to resolve the situation and he apolgised to us all which I appreciated but also it was not his fault. I think going forward it must be made absolutely clear that you need to be back at a given time othwrwise it throws the whole tour and schedule off for everyone.

The long drive from Palermo to Mount Etna was totally worth it - we lucky guys even saw the mountain spit! Joshua was super punctual, super personable, a very pleasant driver and also a talent for languages :) The time in Taormina was a bit short, but there's no other way with the distances. Successful day trip to get out of Palermo.
