Immersive Underground and Piazzas Tour in Rome

9. Immersive Underground and Piazzas Tour in Rome

Immerse yourself in the city's history starting from Piazza Navona, one of the most charming and popular squares in Rome. The most beautiful parts of Piazza Navona are its three fountains, designed during the papacy of Gregory XIII. Erected in the center of Piazza Navona, the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi was designed by Bernini in 1651. After a look over Piazza Navona, you'll enter into the subterranean world beneath the streets of this square which is built over the site of the Stadium of Domitian. The stadium was used almost entirely for athletic contests, and for a brief period following fire-damage to the Colosseum in 217 A.D., it was used for gladiator shows. From the Stadium of Domitian you will go back on the street to move onward to the Pantheon. According to Roman legend, this is the place where at his death, the founder of Rome, Romulus, was seized by an eagle and taken off into the skies with the gods. From the Pantheon to the Secret Bath of Neptune you will have just the time to take a breath before entering into the Basilica of Neptune, built in Rome by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in honor of Neptune. Next, travel to the Trevi Fountain and throw a coin in the water, adhering to tradition. Following the fountain, you'll enter into the subterranean world of Vicus Caprarius, also known as the City of Water. In this underground archaeological area of Vicus Caprarius you will find an intricate labyrinth of ancient remains: the remains of a domus of the imperial era; the castellum aquae of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct.

The tour was taken with the Roman Vacations tours. They are a new outfit, but extremely professional. We were picked up on time, with clear information as to where to meet. You do have to hunt a little bit though as a lot of other groups also meet there. The guide was very informative and there were very few gaps in his oration. Despite that, you never felt that he was going on too much. It was always of interest and humoured. He started off in the Palace and Fort. In that way we were able to then spend as much time in the Colloseum oce the tour had finished and he left us. The tour was very comprehensive and I would highly recommend this particular tour company. The tour included the Roman Forum, Palestine Hill, Colloseum with area floor access and first floor access - so you get to see quite a bit. The underground area was not covered though.

This was well worth it. As you can imagine, it is very busy and hard to spend enough time in something so breathtaking and big. But what made this worth it, was the inside knowledge we got from our guide. It’s like we skipped all of the boring informational panels and got a real look into the past. Arturo was AMAZING. We debunked myths. Got a very frank and funny insight to the political moves of the many empires. He shared secrets of Rome. He shared pictures of what Ancient Rome would have been like. And he gave us local places to eat etc. He was accommodating to the group and went at a pace to not leave anyone behind. Do know that you should leave yourself extra time extra to explore the forum alone. It’s impossible to cover everything in a few hours.

This tour was perfect four our needs. We had my 84 year old mum in a wheelchair and, with help from my adult nephews, managed to visit most of the Roman Forum (we couldn't get the wheelchair up to the top of Palatine Hill) and 2 levels of the Colosseum including the arena floor. Please be aware that Rome is just about the worst place to take a wheelchair. Cobbled streets, no ramps on te kerbs and most Metro stops have no lifts.

Well organised. Guide was very knowledgeable and pace of tour was just right. Kept us moving to get round but plenty of time to enjoy the area. We did the palantine, forum and finished in the colesseum which was great as we had extra time to enjoy the colesseum on our own. Good value

Really really good. Our guide was enthusiastic, well informed and interesting.
