    1. Peterhof Palace and Gardens Half-Day Tour

Commissioned by Peter the Great, Peterhof is the oldest of the Imperial residences of Russia. Today it is a park complex that includes the principle palace and a number of smaller palaces. The main Palace itself is the unique product of two centuries of work. The original design was worked on by Peter himself and was designed with the Palace of Versailles in mind. Today the palace contains a remarkable collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture and much more. Rooms dating back to Peter’s time can be found alongside golden shining baroque halls and calm and austere rooms from the Classical period. Peterhof is often referred to as the Russian Versailles. The idea of creating a residence to rival the luxury of the French Kings was Peter’s ambition and he personally chose the site where several underground water springs were located. Thanks to these underground springs, the amazing...

A chance to walk to the three cathedrals and have other buildings of interest pointed out on the way. Our guide also told us where the points of interest we wanted to visit were located, which was really helpful. We learnt a lot about Russian history - hopefully after all the tours we've done we should remember at least some of it. Beware the people in animal suits at the meeting point, Alexander's column, in Palace Square - if they offer to take a selfie say 'no'! ~They don't tell you how much it will cost.

Anna picked me up from my hotel, I was the only one in attendance so it was a private tour. She drove me to Peterhof in her car, pointing out Stalinist architecture along the way and chatting to me about imperial and Soviet history. We toured both the palace interior and gardens, except it was winter, so we spent less time in the gardens. The ability to "skip the queue" was very helpful as we bypassed several large tour groups and it was cold outside. Anna was very knowledgeable and engaging when it came to touring the palace staterooms. I asked her for recommendations for Georgian cuisine, and she dropped me off at a restaurant close to the city centre on the way back. The tour was 4-5 hours in total, including travel time, and I think it would have taken me much longer had I decided to visit Peterhof by myself (and would have been less informative - audioguides are great, but a poor replacement for a real, live guide). Would recommend. Pro-tip: message the guide to confirm meeting

Marina our guide was extremely knowledgeable and was able to answer all the questions and provide new insights. She is excellent. Our driver was also very good in the busy St Petersburg traffic. This is a tour I highly recommend especially in cold weather.

A very good tour, well-founded and with a lot of interesting information and details.
