Full description
The history of the every cathedral in St. Petersburg reflects some of the most important historical events of Russia, and each of the cathedrals on this private 4-hour tour reveals a complex and difficult story. You will visit the majestic St. Isaac’s Cathedral - comparable to St. Paul’s in London and St. Peter’s in Rome for its splendor. St. Isaac’s took more than 40 years to complete, and is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a patron saint of Peter the Great. Among the highlights you can admire are the reliefs of the bronze doors, and the sculpted dove of the Holy Spirit, suspended under the soaring dome. Continue to the Church on Spilt Blood (also known as the Church of the Savior on Blood), built on the site where Tsar Alexander II was mortally injured in 1881. Its superb onion domes and location on the banks of the Griboedov Canal are a mere taster for its breathtaking interior mosaics. Next, visit St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, founded to patronize the Russian navy, and kneel down in front of the shrine that contains a portion of the relics of St. Nicholas. A major example of Rastrelliesque Baroque (named after the Italian architect, Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who worked in Imperial Russia), behind its beautiful blue façade, you will find gilded domes and plaques that commemorate crew lost at sea.
