Bergen: Historic Highlights Guided Walking Tour

5. Bergen: Historic Highlights Guided Walking Tour

Looking for a short walk that will provide you with a comprehensive overview of Bergen's main historic sites? This walk is for you! This winter-special walk (September-May) will keep you (mostly) out of the rain and cold as we wander through the two main historic sites in Bergen: the fortress and Bryggen. It's also only one hour, so you aren't outside for too long. The walk is at a gentle pace, so it's suitable for everybody. In one hour, you will walk through Bergen's old palace and around Bergen's merchant district. Bergen was founded in 1070 as the main commercial city in Scandinavia, and it remained the most important trading city until the 16th century. For around 100 years, Bergen was also Norway's capital. At the fortress you see remains from the palace, the Danish & Swedish unions, and the Nazi occupation. Bergen's UNESCO World Heritage-listed wharf Bryggen is famous for the Hanseatic League that lived there for about 400 years. This merchant district was the main point of export for stockfish (dried cod), and here the Hanseatic League (a German male society/guild) enjoyed special privileges and a unique lifestyle. These two historic locations are best explored with a guide, and our guides will provide you with a historic overview of Bergen and better understanding of why this city is so special. We only talk about history on this tour. If you want to combine history with everyday life and modern times, join our Past & Present tour instead. If you want to go off the beaten path, this tour can be combined with our Nordnes tour (which runs immediately after this tour).

6. From Bergen: Private Mostraumen Fjord and Waterfall Cruise

Experience narrow fjords, steep mountainsides, and mighty waterfalls with a local guide on a private cruise to Osterfjord on a day trip from Bergen. Set sail from Bergen's Fish Market, as your guide points to some of the oldest and most relevant historical sites in the city, including the medieval fortress Bergenhus, St. Mary's church, and the UNESCO-listed Bryggen Hanseatic wharf. From there, sail through the western Norwegian scenery in the Fjord City, Salhusfjorden, and Osterfjord towards the stunning Mostraumen Channel. Sip on soft drinks, and soak in the views as the captain safely steers the boat through steep mountainsides, a maze of islands, and cascading waterfalls. Venture deeper into the fjord and see the mountain landscape become steeper and narrower. Get up close to waterfalls and feel the cold spray on your face. With a little luck, you can spot seals sunbathing on the rocky shore so keep your eyes peeled for the wildlife around you. Dane is an incredible guide! He is immensely knowledgable and very personable. This tour is a fab way to introduce you to Bergen/Norway and its history. You are taken down the less trodden paths of the city, whilst learning about the charms of the buildings and its people. Ask any question and you get a detailed and well thought answer. Dane also had plenty of tips on what to visit after the tour, where to eat and drink, and where to find good live music. This company is very professional and goes above and beyond. Highly recommend!

With only 2 days in Bergen, we wanted to get familiar with the area quickly so we could enjoy it and not miss anything. The tour did exactly that, and our guide Emma was knowledgeable and made it an enjoyable tour. The areas around Bryggen were covered well, and we neither got bored nor felt rushed. In the following day and a half, we had a great time doing what we wanted instead of trying to find our way around.

A great visit with Dane! The history of Bergen and Norway explained in perfect, simple English. Stroll through the small non-touristy streets of the city, with many anecdotes. And as a bonus some advice on places to visit or restaurants not to be missed. I really had a great time!

Neal Hoffmann was an excellent guide. He explained in detail the history and present Bergen. We had a great tour in the city. we learned a lot and the other group members were excellent as well.
