9 places to visit in and around Split
Split, Croatia is often viewed as a base-city for island hopping day trips, but its buzzing Dalmatian culture begs a second look. The city is a fascinating nexus of tradition and stylish modernity, and its beautiful coastline of course doesn’t hurt either.
1. Diocletian's Palace/Basement Halls
This gigantic ancient fortress should be your first stop in Split. The entire city center is ruins of this incredible complex that today houses bars, restaurants, and shops.
2. Marjan
The beautifully maintained park is perfect for an afternoon walk or bike ride, a change from the bustling city.
3. Ivan Mestrovic Gallery
This museum is quality over quantity. Seeing works by the great 20th century sculptor displayed in such a naturally beautiful environment makes the trip outside of town worth it.
4. Cathedral of Saint Domnius
The structure is almost unchanged since its consecration in the 7th century, and nowhere else in Split will you find the view at the top of the bell tower.
5. Croatian National Theatre in Split
This beautiful building is home to the best entertainment in the city. The opera house’s hidden gem is the Sustipan venue, an outdoor spot perfect for a drink under the stars.
6. Split Festival
Festival Zabavne Glazbe Split is a pop music festival that has, and continues to feature, the best Croatian artists since 1960.
7. Hvar
Take the ferry a couple hours south of Split to the island city Hvar. Stay a night or two to explore the city’s restaurants, marinas, museums, galleries, and cafes.
8. Brac
Another island is Brac, a place known for producing the white stone that the White House is made of. Wander through the abandoned stone villages in the center of the island.
9. Split to Dubrovnik Sailing Trip
There are a variety of boat trips to the ancient city of Dubrovnik, a stunning city of history surrounded by the shimmering beauty of the Adriatic.
Planning Your Visit
Take the bus
The trains aren’t as reliable in this part of Europe, but don’t be afraid of the local buses. They’re clean, safe, and amazingly well connected.
Talking on the Phone While Driving Is Illegal
If you do rent a car, be aware that laws, especially about talking on the phone, are strictly enforced. And if you prefer automatic cars, be sure to let the rental company know while booking.
Be Careful Before You Show Some Skin
It’s totally cool to go topless at most of these beaches, but use discretion. Ninety percent of Croatians are Catholic and some islands are still very religious, like Vrbnik, for example.

What people are saying about Split
Plitvice Lakes are a must see when in Croatia, and this is a brilliant and efficient way to get from Split to Zagreb Andrei our guide was great and kindly chaperoned us right to the door of the hotel in Zagreb, such a great way to transfer between cities with luggage! It felt like we really got to see a good deal of the lakes even though it felt a tad rushed at times (I would suggest slowing down slightly and allotting some time for eating lunch/ stopping to just soak up the atmosphere in the park) - I'd still highly recommend this tour and think there's no better way to transfer.
Rafting was so much fun! The views are gorgeous, especially in Autumn. Christian, our guide, was absolutely fantastic! He was so knowledgeable and funny and made the trip so enjoyable. It was such a pleasure to have him lead us. My fiancé and I always felt safe, and we had a blast paddling in the river and riding the rapids. You’re surrounded by so much nature, and it was just so awesome! I would definitely recommend doing this if you’re near Split. We drove 2 hours to get there, and we thought it was worth it!
Absolutely fantastic day, our guide Ernest was superb and made this a real highlight of our holiday. He shared his incredible knowledge of Croatia and Croatian history with us, but also his life and experience as a local, which was a real privilege. Thank you Ernest! The parks are beautiful, the tour is well paced and the car is very comfortable. Highly recommended.
Luka was an amazing tour guide, biggest GOT fan, was able to answer all of my questions and more. I got Iucky, I was the only one who took the tour that day, and it was simply perfect. Luka showed me exactly from which spot each scene was filmed, and with his enthusiasm and expertise you could really see it! If you love Game of Thrones this is the tour for you!
Fantastic trip! My driver was prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable. Plus, I appreciated all the offers to be my camera man. The convenience of a private drive to Rastoke, Plitvice, and then ending in Split from Zagreb was great. Highly recommend. I would even consider skipping Rastoke and the boat ride to check out the upper lakes also.
