I would definitely recommend going on this walking tour when visiting Sofia. The guide (Nikola) knows pretty much everything there’s to know about the communist period in Bulgaria (which is hard as there’s basically nothing to find). The tour takes approx. three hours but doesn’t feel like that at all.

Great walking tour, the three hours went very quickly despite the tour being packed with information. Niki was incredibly engaging and his references to his family’s own experiences really made the tour. I was worried we’d be walking for three hours straight but it was the perfect amount to see everything with lots of breaks in between. I would highly recommend this as a way to spend an afternoon in Sofia.

Going on this tour is the best decision I've done during my trip to Sofia. Nikola is extremely knowledgeable, and his passion in letting foreigners understand more about Bulgaria's socialist past is unparalleled. I have absolutely nothing to complain about the tour. I now know about more how ordinary Bulgarians lived through that era and why (the reasons are complex to be sure) communist rule collapsed toward the end of the 1980s. I highly recommend it to all history buffs and travelers interested in the economic, political, and social transformations of twentieth-century Bulgaria.
