Paragliding Sofia from Above

4. Paragliding Sofia from Above

A splendid view to the Bulgarian capital, Sofia,  is revealed from the top of the Vitosha Mountains. But the view is even more spectacular from the air. Goli Peak is the place where you'll start to fly in tandem with your pilot-instructor. It will take 40-50 minutes drive to get there, followed by a 15 minute walk. Landing is at the meadows around Dragalevtsi. The flight itself lasts about 10–30 minutes, depending on the weather conditions.  Paragliding is the recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying paragliders: lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing comprising a large number of interconnected baffled cells. Wing shape is maintained by the suspension lines, the pressure of air entering vents in the front of the wing, and the aerodynamic forces of the air flowing over the outside. Despite not using an engine, a paraglider's flight can last many hours and cover many hundreds of kilometers, over flights of 1-2 hours,  covering some tens of kilometers. The pilot can skilfully gain height, often climbing to altitudes of a few thousand meters.

Sofia: Drift School Driving Experience

9. Sofia: Drift School Driving Experience

An unforgettable 1 hour experience for lovers of high speeds and adrenaline - you drive the car yourself! Drift driving side by side with one of the best instructors in Bulgaria. What is drift? A driving technique in which the vehicle is deliberately driven out of control by "oversteer", causing the rear tires to lose traction. The car moves across the curve under its own weight. We start with a short practice part and continue with the real drifting. The academy features a track with a special surface that simulates snow and rain, which helps build reflexes for full control of the car. Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, with loss of traction, while maintaining control and driving the car through the entirety of a corner. The technique causes the rear slip angle to exceed the front slip angle to such an extent that often the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa, also known as opposite lock or counter-steering). Drifting is traditionally done by clutch kicking (where the clutch is rapidly disengaged and re-engaged with the intention of upsetting the grip of the rear wheels), then intentionally oversteering and countersteering. This sense of drift is not to be confused with the four wheel drift, a classic cornering technique established in Grand Prix and sports car racing. As a motoring discipline, drifting competitions were first popularized in Japan in the 1970s and further popularized by the 1995 manga series Initial D. Drifting competitions are held worldwide and are judged according to the speed, angle, showmanship, and line taken through a corner or set of corners. A valid driver's license is required for this service. Pick-up from your hotel.

What people are saying about Sofia

We were picked up by George from our hotel and straight away we were put at ease. He gave lots of information about Sofia, things we would not have heard anywhere else as well as recommendations for things to do in the city. The hike itself was amazing but make no mistake it's not an easy hike. We hiked down to Boyana Waterfall first which was stunning, with spectacular views over the city. We hiked back up and had a break in the hut before starting on our hike up to one of the peaks of the mountain. George was fantastic, going at a pace that we could keep up with and giving information about the mountains as we walked. When we reached the summit, the hike was absolutely worth it! Absolutely breathtaking views over Sofia and beyond (so lucky with the weather!). We had some lunch and chatted with George who told us of some of the places he has been (everywhere!!) before heading back down the mountain. The tour did take about 8 hours but it was so worth every minute!

A great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors as the locals do. On Vitosha Mountain - the "lungs" of Sofia- we shared a day in the park with local hikers and families enjoying the weekend with their kids and dogs. I ended the day physically tired but so happy and stimulated to learn more about this beautiful country. My guide Maria was so much more than a tour guide, she taught me about history, language, food, flora and fauna - In one day I learned more about Bulgaria from her than I could have learned from any book. I definitely recommend her and would love to have her as my guide again on a future visit.

- fantastic nature paired with one of the best tour guides we have ever had - thank you Maria! - we were traveling with a baby and everything worked out great, absolutely recommendable!!!

it was amazing trekking experience and guide was very kind and experienced about vitosha mountain.

Super nice walk despite the strong wind and snowfall. Guide is patient and knowledgeable
