Get picked up from your accommodation in Skopje and ride in a comfortable air-conditioned car/minivan through the beautiful Albanian-Bulgarian countryside towards Sofia. Make a stop to visit the Rila Monastery, the most important spiritual and literary center of the Bulgarian national revival, with an uninterrupted history from the Middle Ages until present times. Learn about its founding in the 10th century by St John of Rila and marvel at the remarkably colorful architecture and religious art that make it a characteristic example of the Bulgarian Renaissance. You'll also have the chance to pass through Kumanovo, Kriva Palanka, Kjustendil, Dupnica on your way to Sofia.
Starting from your hotel in Skopje, travel to the Rila Monastery and enjoy at least 2 hours of free time to explore the most visited UNESCO site in Bulgaria. See the arcaded balconies, unique frescoes, gilded iconostasis, set in front of fabulous mountain views. Enter the main church and take photos of the narthex's gallery, admire the exhibits in the History Museum of the Monastery, try the tasty 'mekitsi' (Bulgarian doughnuts) with delicious buffalo yogurt, or take a short walk in the area. Break for coffee or lunch before continuing your trip to Sofia where you will be dropped off at your hotel or accommodation.
After pick up from your accommodation in Skopje, you will begin your tour with a drive to Kratovo, where your local guide will be waiting for you. Your guide will begin to show you the city in his own style, which is bound to be very different from others. You will also have the opportunity to taste plenty of local home-style foods, some of which you will even help prepare.
