Full description
Journey through Savannah's notable maritime history on a self-guided tour of the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum. Wander through the exhibits at your own pace, and discover a collection of ship models, maritime antiques, stunning maritime art, and special exhibitions of local and internationally-acclaimed artists. As you take your tour, spend some time marveling at the architecture of the William Scarbrough House, the museum's home, which was designated a National Historic Landmark by the US Park Service in 1974. Delve into the many detailed elements of the Regency architecture, including the honeysuckle and palm molding, the Diocletian window, Doric and Corinthian columns, six-panel curved doors, and a stunning skylight. Once you're done inside, head out to the expansive gardens and savor the sights and smells of the delightful flowers, trees, and shrubs. Take shade under the largest and oldest sycamore tree in the city of Savannah, and enjoy scenic views of the historic Talmadge Bridge from the belvedere. Check out the pavilion, reflective ponds, a vine-covered pergola, a rondelle, an assembly room, and one of only two remaining early 20th-century weather kiosks in the United States, which resembles a Greek Revival Temple. The Ships of the Sea Museum is among 150 other historic places in the US that are members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Distinctive Destination Program.

I loved the fact that the tour was self-guided and the museum was not crowded at all. I chose to go around the noon hour figuring it would be slow then and it was! I loved looking at all the very intricate historical ship models and reading about their history in maritime combat. The antique figurehead statues at the bows of the ships were a surprising element I enjoyed seeing on the third floor.
