2. Madeira Island: Caldeirão Verde Levada Walk

Caldeirão Verde means green cauldron in Portuguese and well describes the environs of this 6.5-kilometer walk. This half-day levada walk takes you through the highest area of Santana. A levada is an aqueduct or irrigation channel that is unique to the island of Madeira. This is without doubt one of the most beautiful levadas on Madeira. Located in the Laurissilva forest the highlights of the trail include fantastic views of São Jorge and a series of tunnels of natural basaltic rock. Start out in the emerald green Queimadas rainforest and enjoy scenic views over villages as you follow alongside the winding levada and through 5 short natural tunnels. When you arrive at Caldeirão Verde you’ll marvel at the majestic waterfall.

What people are saying about Sao Jorge

It was our first tour on Madeira and we were amazed by the incredibly green nature in some rugged rock formations. Crossing the tunnels was a bit adventurous. The route was a little busy, probably due to the holiday. Our guide did a good job, but unfortunately didn't pay attention to the cohesion of the group on the way back, because our goal wasn't to get back to the bus as quickly as possible, but to take a closer look at one or the other on the way back.

The excursion was great (Levado do Rei, approx. 10 km, easy to walk), my guide Marco gave me all the freedom to take photos, set my own pace and enjoy nature and the walk. I felt in good hands all round. Richard had coordinated the pick-up at the hotel in advance, the entire appointment coordination worked well. And the subsequent stop for lunch was good, no tourist restaurant, down-to-earth, good cuisine. I give 10 out of 10 points :-) for this trip.

This was an energetic walk with a very informative guide. Not for the faint hearted with some narrow sections and big drops plus the tunnels but well worth doing. Mix up re our pick up point was resolved but needs to be a bit clearer as to bus stop or bus station. There is a difference.

Caldeirão Verde is a must see for hikers. Very beautiful greenery and waterfalls. The guide was fun and made us feel safe.

Very nice walk along the Levada impressive viewpoints and very professional guide
