Samana: Whale Watching Tour

8. Samana: Whale Watching Tour

Every year from the middle of January until the end of March you are able to see Humpback Whales in Samana. Samana is considered one of the best places in the world for humpback whale watching. These beautiful and giant marine mammals, come out regularly to the surface to breathe, remain in apnea for about twenty minutes, but can remain underwater for up to forty minutes. Whales come to Samana to give birth due to their whalebone when born, only having a very thin layer of fat so cannot withstand the cold waters. At birth, the calf measures between three and a half and five meters and weighs a ton. After being collected from your hotel in Puerto Plata, Sosua or Cabarete, make your way to Samana and enjoy the amazing views of the lovely Dominican landscapes. Departing from the dock in the town of Samana, a fast and secure boat will transport you in comfort, in search of whales. Next, you will head to Bacardi Island, also known as Cayo Levantado. On the island a delicious typical Dominican lunch will be served. Amazing! The tour was well organized and the tour gide clearly stated what and when we gonna do what. The local food was tasty, the waterfall horse ride bumpy but the view talks for itself. Bacardi island - wow! Also pineapple picacolada was included. Tips for others: bring long socks for horse ride - they give you boots cuz the way down is messy. A downgrade was horse rider who all asked for tips stating that they dont get any money, which is weird and knowing this country it may be their way of just getting the extra cash, when we wanted to give a guy few dollars he asked to go under a bush so no one could see it.

This day trip was great from start to finish. Easy meeting place for pick up. Our tour guide was Natanael. He was very knowledgeable about the area and was educated in Dominican History so he added that dimension to his information. Samana is a beautiful place.I really liked the panoramic views during the bus ride to Miches and had plenty of time to enjoy the boat ride to Cayo Levantado and Samana bay,the horseback ride to El Limon waterfalls and a delicious Dominican lunch. Very well organized and clean. This was one of the best excursions I have ever experienced. I would recommend this tour and tour operator.

We all found the trip to Samana Bay very nice. We were picked up on time and took the bus to the marina, where we were then taken over to Samana Bay by boat. Once there, we had time to enjoy the beach. Afterwards there was a rich lunch. Then we went on by boat and transport for horse riding through a jungle where we came to a great waterfall. All in all, a successful excursion. We would definitely recommend it.

Very good excursion. Amassing view at el limon waterfall, riding the horse was amazing, lunch tasty , the guide Nata was excellent and beach was also nice. The only problem is transportation and communication with the local agency...we did not receive confirmation for exactly time of pick up and we wait for 5:15 am until 7 am in front of hotel...very frustrating to wake up at 4:30...

Excellent excursion to discover the interior of the land, the flora of the island. Rich adventure!
