Full description
Travel to the Monastery of Montserrat, the largest monastery in Catalonia and the second largest in Spain. Listen to the long-established, renowned boys choir sing in the basilica if you come between September and June. Admire the stunning landscape of the monastery's surroundings. Look out over mountains of various shapes and sizes that loom into view from the plateau where the monastery is situated. Queue to touch the statue of the Black Madonna, the patron saint of Catalonia who is said to bring you luck – or even a child. Visit the various museums in the area or make your way over to the market and peruse a selection of homemade products. Relax at one of the restaurants for something to eat or drink. In the afternoon, head back to Salou. Make a stop at the village of Roc de Sant Gaietà, a beautiful coastal town featuring a diverse array of architectural styles and a small beach. Admire the picturesque white houses lining the narrow streets and stop to rest in squares decorated with fountains and plants. Enjoy to look around on your own, take photos, and have an ice cream or drink.

In the morning we visited Colonia Güell. It was wonderfully quiet. This is partly because this is not at all a popular tourist destination for many Spaniards and foreigners (very unjustified by the way!) but also because according to our (super) guide Bruno it is best to visit the colonia in the morning and Monstserrat in the afternoon. Visit starts at the beautiful crypt (designed by Gaudi) with explanation, then a tour with information about the most important houses in the colonia. After this there is a short break. We enjoyed the interior of Ateneu Unio. In the afternoon the visit to the monastery of Montserrat follows. The drive there is an experience in itself. The monastery is beautiful and you should definitely visit the black madonna and the prayer room behind it. With the cable car we went all the way up where you (in good weather) have a beautiful view of the surroundings. You can go back down on foot, but we didn't have the time for that anymore.

What a fantastic day. Left Salou and headed to Colonia Guell where we saw the church built by gaudi and the rest of the town before a brief stop for a drink at a little local bar. On then to montseratt monastery, a steep climb up winding roads to breathtaking views. The monastery, basilica and other buildings are simply beautiful, the small room contains the black Madonna is intricate and stunning, the work is incredible. Whilst this is a great place to visit, it was made even better by our guide ‘Bruno.’ He has been taking tours since 1994 and his knowledge and commentary is first class. He also slips seamlessly from Spanish to English, French and German keeping everyone involved. I went with my wife, 18 year old daughter and 14 year old son and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day, would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.
