Full description
Stonehenge is perhaps the most famous prehistoric monument in the world. It was built in several stages, beginning as a simple earthwork enclosure. The unique linteled stone circle was erected in the late Neolithic period, around 2500 B.C. Your timed admission ticket gives you access to a site that has continued to attract interest for centuries. Today Stonehenge, Avebury, and other associated locations comprise a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring a unique and dense concentration of prehistoric monuments. Stonehenge has been the subject of speculation and fascination since at least the early medieval period. How did Neolithic people construct this masterpiece of engineering using only the simple tools and technologies available to them? Hundreds of prehistoric objects from the Stonehenge World Heritage Site are on display in the visitor center. One of the new features at Stonehenge is an outdoor gallery that includes several reconstructed Neolithic houses. Using archaeological evidence and authentic materials, these buildings provide a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Neolithic people who built Stonehenge. Stonehenge has many different meanings to people today. It is an icon of Britain, a wonder of the world, a spiritual place, and a source of inspiration.

Arrived at Salisbury Station and took the tour bus to Stonehenge. The tour bus is £16 return and is NOT included with the ticket. On arriving we were quickly through the queue and on a free bus from the visitor centre to the monument. The audio tour mobile app was very educational and great to learn about some of the country’s ancient history. After finishing the path around the monument we went to Woodhenge only two miles away to the North East. Woodhenge was worth the walk and everything was enjoyed by both of us. The staff is very helpful and made the visitor centre something that was easy to access and find out information. I will be back again with my family.

Very well organised during Covid restrictions. Good parking facilities, toilets and refreshments. Walking to the site is the best option for able people although the paths laid out are a bit uneven and makes way for uncomfortable walking some of the way. Taking the shuttle bus is worth it as it is a bit of a walk. Glad you can get close enough for close up photos.

Absolutely enjoyed the walk on a beautiful September day, to the stones from the centre. People were eating picnics and having fun by the stones. Very joyful lots of energy at the stones. After got the bus back to the restaurant and had a nice cool drink. Lovely day out.
