Full description

Start your visit at the Capuchin Museums to learn about the place's culture and spirituality. Continue towards the Crypt of the Three Skeletons, the only area where the human skeleton can be seen in its unadorned entirety. Next, visit the Crypt of the Leg Bones and Thigh Bones. Admire the Crypt of Pelvises, which contains 2 Capuchins serenely reclining in an arched position. Look at the crosses on the ground, which marks the graves of the 7 Capuchins.

Stroll through the Crypt of the Skulls and check out its famous hourglass. Learn about how, when the Capuchins left their old friary near the Trevi Fountain, they decided to transfer the bones of friars who had been buried under the Church of Saint Bonaventure.

In accordance with Capuchin law, which did not allow burials to take place within the churches, an underground cemetery was designed. Here, they deposited the bones brought from the old friary. Since then, the crypt has been the burial place of the Capuchins.

An interesting addition to our week in Rome. After having seen all the highlights like the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, etc., this was something completely different. This was more of a "quality over quantity" activity, since the museum and the crypts weren't all too big. The things that were on display, however, were very interesting and showed a completely other side of Roman history. Our guide, Slob (Yes, that's his name. He'll explain.), struck a nice balance between respect, morbid curiosity, and comic relief. In a place where you will be looking at a lot of human bones, it is in a way necessary to lighten the atmosphere now and then.

It was great having a guide through this experience, specially because we knew very little about the history behind the church and the crypt. Great to have someone explain everything. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. We did the tour in august, which was extremely hot in august, but getting indoors for a tour was a great break from the heat.

We decided on this tour as an extra, yet it turned out to be one of the most fascinating places we went to! Not having much knowledge of the crypts, we were unsure of what to expect. But I’m not sure anything would have prepared us for how incredible they are anyway! Our visit was topped off by having a highly knowledgeable and entertaining host! I’d recommend this as a must see!
