Full description
This tour will take you on an underground journey through an Ancient Roman complex of residential and commercial buildings where people once lived and worked. What remains of this complex, situated beneath the Basilica of Saint John and Saint Paul, is stunning architecture, frescoes and mosaics. These buildings are now known as Case Romance and are accessible from a street called Clivus Scauri, one of the most significant Ancient Roman roads along Caelian Hill.  When you visit the Roman Houses, you will enter into the "Room of the Geniuses" - in Roman mythology, a "geni" is a sort of guardian spirit present in all living beings and objects. You will then be taken to see the most ornate room of the houses, "Room of the Orant", a room of worship based on the paintings on the wall. These walls are thought to have been painted during the 4th century, they depict philosophers, a mask of Silenius, a female theatre mask, fantasy monsters and livestock. The next room you will visit is "The Nymphaeum of Prosperpina", which was originally an interior open-air courtyard which separated the residential houses from the commercial ones.  At the conclusion of this tour you will sample an aperitif, the food and drinks will be prepared according to Ancient Roman standards, enhanced by pottery and glass inspired by the Ancient tables.
