Located 16 meters below ground level, the catacombs were the final resting place for wealthy Christians and Christian Martyrs, including Saint Marcellinus and Peter. The catacombs are also the location of a mausoleum built by Constantine for his family, including his mother, Saint Helen.

The catacombs are home to a large collection of paintings and frescoes that date back to the third and fourth centuries. Recently restored by laser technology, these frescoes provide a glimpse into the art of the time.
