Full description

Rio's Carnival is the most popular and the best Carnival in the world! No wonder it was named “Largest Carnival in the World” in 2004 by the Guinness Book of World Records. Carioca Carnival is a cultural event, where freedom of expression dominates in a creative and fun way, represented through samba school parades, carnival balls, and a street carnival. The official Samba School parades take place in Rio de Janeiro Sambadrome, created by the most renowned Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer, and inaugurated in 1983 with a capacity for 80,000 spectators. Every year, the Samba Schools compete for the Carnival Champion Title, and one school will be chosen as the best of the best. More than 30,000 people perform throughout Carnival. Each school has between 4,000 and 5,000 participants. There are 5 days of parades, divided into three categories: Access Group, Special Group, and Champions Parade.

Access Group

Feb. 9 and 10 - In the Access Group, the Samba Schools do their best to enter to the Special Group for the following year. You will see 12 schools – 6 per day – parade with enthusiasm and beauty. This is perfect for those who want to see the magic of carnival on a budget.

Special Group

Feb. 11 and 12 - These are considered the main days of the Carnival Parade. The best 14 Samba schools in Rio de Janeiro – 7 per day – show all their creativity and innovations. These are the true magical nights of the Sambadrome. Tickets are more expensive for these days as it is the most popular parade with major league schools.

Champions Parade

Feb. 17 - On that night, the top six Special Group schools, plus the Access Group Champion repeat their performances. This is an extraordinary night to see the Carnaval champions of the year.

This is a once in a life experience! It is not for everyone’s affinity. There is a lot of people. You have to walk too much and rise stairs. When the show is on, you feel like people multiplicate everywhere. The duration was too much time for me. The carnival is unique, many colors, excellent live music, happiness, lights and very good energy. It is important to have a rest before going there.

Carnival Parade is a huge competition of different samba schools. You will be impressed by the efforts those schools used for art, music, idea, choreography. There are hundreds of thousands visitors watchin in area of 2 metro stations and thousands of dancers and musicians performing from sunset to sunrise. It is must go for everyone at least once in a life. Ticket company does speak English, they use WhatsApp for easier communication too, in case you cannot find their office. One concern - it should include subway ticket but it was not in the paper bag with carnival ticket.

Easy ticket pick up at a shop in Copocabana excellent advice from them on the metro and access. On the night the metro was easy and fats , avoided the crowds and taxis can run into road closures and blockages so the advice to use the safe metro very good. It seems the events at the Sambadrome typically start late Friday night was due to start at 8 but apparently started at 10; Saturday (the day we went) was due the start at 9 and started at 10:45. However we had some wet weather and this may have been the reason for the delay. In the general grandstand the seat are actually just Concrete. Take a cushion - but as soon a she parred starts everyone stands anyway.
