7. From Reykjavik: Private South Coast Day Trip & Glacier Hike

Explore the magical sites of the South Coast sightseeing route from Reykjavik with this immersive private small-group tour. Those eager to see waterfalls, black sand beaches, and an array of other marvels should not hesitate to book this 10-hour excursion. This adventure begins when your guide picks you up from Iceland’s capital and whisks you out of the city. You’ll be free to ask them questions about the surroundings and culture, and they’ll tell you about the sites you pass, including geothermal landscapes, ice-capped mountains, and distant islands. Your first stop will be at the waterfall of Skogafoss. This impressive feature is breathtakingly powerful, cascading from a height of 197 feet (60 meters) and with a width of up to 82 feet (25 meters). Your guide will inform you about the folklore here, and you can walk right up to the blooming spray. Next, you will head to the Dyrholaey rock arch, an enormous feature that curves into the ocean from a set of cliffs on the shore. It is large enough for ships to enter and small planes to fly through. If you travel in summer, you will see a colony of puffins nesting in couples, swooping through the sky, and diving in the waters. These animals have little fear of people, allowing you to get surprisingly close. You will then reach Reynisfjara beach. This place is as haunting as it is beautiful, with alien black sands, bizarre geological formations, and enormous waves. The most notable sites here are the sea stacks of Reynisdrangar and the basalt columns at the cliffs of Reynisfjall. After soaking in the marvels at the beach, we will head over to Solheimajokull Glacier, for a privately guided glacier hike that will get the adrenaline going. After walking around this mystical attraction, you’ll turn back on the Ring Road to return to Reykjavik. However, you have one more stop on the way - the beautiful waterfall of Seljalandsfoss. This feature is gentler than Skogafoss but just as tall, and you can walk behind it due to the cavern behind the cascading water. You’ll then be dropped off in the capital in time for dinner, drinks, or a northern lights hunt in the city if traveling in winter. Definitely recommend this trip to anyone wanting to see more of Iceland. We were blessed with fantastic weather and our wonderful guide Monika & driver Tomak took us to a couple of extra stops along the way to make the most of the day. The waterfalls were amazing (although due to it still being slippy we didn't get to walk behind the waterfall at Selijalandsfoss, but it didn't take anything away from the day. The beach at Reynisfjara was beautiful but the glacier at Solheimajokull was breathtaking - we'd definitely do the glacier hike if we get to come back again. During the journey Monika told us lots about the area and Icelandic traditions and played us lots of Icelandic music - very much appreciated.

Awesome trip and an entirely unforgettable one. We saw many sights, all of which are spectacular in winter (I believe the best time to visit). Hard to say which is the best as each is unique. There is a fair bit of time on the coach between events, but you have to travel to see the sights and it was very comfortable between each event. The guide was nothing short of amazing. He was like a walking encyclopaedia of the area, helpful, insightful and amusing at the same time. Worth every penny and would do it again tomorrow.

The tour was excellent! Our guide and the driver did the job wonderfully. However, the service description could be better and include information that one can have limited access to some activities in the winter. Don't lose the opportunity to eat a Black Crust Pizza. It's just amazing.

After doing the golden circle tour I thought this wouldn't be as good but I was so wrong. The scenery was breathtaking every time you think it can't any better you go round a corner and see something else amazing. The glacier was a highlight but everything was spectacular.

This was my best trip ever in Iceland. I never had such a wonderful and knowledgeable tour guide before. He talked, told stories and answered questions the whole time. Amazing guide. Highly recommend
