Full description

They say that sharing a meal is the best way to get to know each other but a walking tour with 4 to 6 foodie stops is even better! The stops include the oldest restaurant in Reykjavik, a legendary hot dog stand, the local's favorite food market if open and one of the top restaurants in Iceland.

This tour samples many different Icelandic dishes; both traditional classics and modern favorites. Your guide knows all the best spots to get the famous Icelandic meat soup (just like mamma makes it), flatkake with smoked lamb, delicious lobster soup, and more yummy treats.

Even try some fermented shark, if you dare. Learn what the Vikings ate and how Icelandic people have survived harsh winters thanks to their special cooking and preserving methods.

The tour runs everyday and you’ll walk around 2.5 kilometers, making plenty of stops along the way. With no more than 12 people on a tour, you’ll be able to ask any questions about Icelandic food and culture, plus make a few new friends. And, you certainly won’t leave feeling hungry.

Meeting point

This tour meets at Ingolfstorg Square in the center of Reykjavik by the two stone high seat pillars (over 2 meters high). The square is at the beginning of Austurstræti (Austurstræti 1) and is squared off by the streets Aðalstræti, Hafnarstræti, Veltusund and Vallarstræti. If you walk down Laugavegur (the main shopping street), please continue until the end. On Ingolfur Square itself, you can see Kvosin, a small grocery market, Citycenter Plaza Hotel, Hlölli (a fast food establishment) and finally a kebab house. It is recommended to use Google Maps as the Icelandic Street names can be tricky.

Make sure you come hungry because the portions are huge! There were varieties of local food that we tried during the tour. We had a picky eater in our group and they were able to accommodate her requests. Put your guide was fun and knowledgeable. Definitely worth the price! We even got photos afterwards from our tour guide, Bardi.

We did this tour this evening and really enjoyed it! Unnur, our guide, was so knowledgeable and great company. The food was all good (although I won't be rushing to eat the shark again) and it was a great way to get to know a bit about Reykjavik on our first night.

Our guide Viktor was fantastic! There were 3 of us and we We all had a blast. Tried foods that were fantastic and some that will remain a once in a lifetime food adventure. Throughout the tour Viktor not only talked about the food but also history of the area and the culture. We highly recommend this experience!
