Full description

Enjoy an afternoon or evening hike in Geldingadalur Valley, where eruptions over the past two years have transformed the landscape. Learn about the history of volcanoes in the area as well as an introduction to the underlying science from your expert guide.

Get picked up in Reykjavík and set out on a scenic drive surrounded by breathtaking views towards the Fagradalsfjall Volcano, Meradalir, and Geldingadallur Valley.

Once at the valley, put on your hiking gear and head towards the volcano to hopefully see some lava flowing. The eruption has stopped in recent days, but there was flowing lava here as recently as August 20th, 2022. Bring snacks along with you and enjoy them while you gaze upon this natural wonder.

Afterward, as you drive along the peninsula, your guide will fill you in on the history of volcanos in the area, many long-dormant, now covered by soft green lava moss.

Now the major factor here is the weather - no snow & no blizzards. Thw walk is about the right length, quite steep in parts but you just take your time, make your own pace & others wait - its not a race. Duce to snow on the lava flow you could see the areas that were warm/hot which were amazing + the walk onto the lava flow that was still warm was a wonderful experience.

This wasn't exactly as described. The volcano is dormant and the photos shown make it seem as if you might have the chance to see real magma. We were also picked up late, so waiting out in -9 degrees for 45mins. The details are vague, it says 1.5-2hrs hiking which I took to mean each way. But we out on the tour for 2hrs max. We also hired crampons in Reykjavik and we brought our own walking poles when they were given out freely. Had we known that we wouldn't have! However all being said, the views were unreal. Our tour guide was really knowledgeable and took the time to talk to us even though there was like 30-35 of us. I'm really glad I went and I even got a little bit of cooled lava to keep!

Awesome day. Wasn’t as we were expecting at all. I really thought it was going to be a full on hiking day, but turned out to be so much fun. Took in some other sights on the coach. The guide was awesome and great sense of humour and informative. Totally recommend it.
