From Reykjavik: Reykjanes Volcanic Hike & Blue Lagoon Option

1. From Reykjavik: Reykjanes Volcanic Hike & Blue Lagoon Option

After complimentary pickup in Reykjavik, take a scenic drive along the lava-shaped coast toward the first stop. Once there, follow the trail to the Geldingadalir Valley under the care of your experienced guide. Since it first exploded into life in March 2021, Iceland’s newest volcano has sent rivers of molten lava flowing across this rugged wilderness. Hundreds of thousands of people have come to see the youngest mountain in the world, and this is your opportunity to see the brand-new jet-black fields of lava for yourself! The knowledgeable guides will lead you to the volcano site and show how this unstoppable force has dramatically changed the Icelandic landscape. Before you arrive there, you will first see Seltun, an almost lunar landscape of red rocks, orange sediments, hissing mud pots and hot springs. There, you’ll be dazzled by the multi-colored craters and steam vents. The Reykjanes peninsula features even more fascinating geological gems. Next, visit the Gunnuhver Hot Springs, a group of active mud pools and steam vents named after a local witch who in folklore met her doom here, so watch your step. After, take a short 5-minute drive to Valahnúkamöl, stunning bird cliffs and basalt columns rising from the sea. Spend some time here enjoying the views of the iconic sights, including Reykjanesviti Lighthouse, the oldest still-standing structure of its kind in Iceland. From there, move on to the Bridge Between Continents, a place where a small metal footbridge straddles the ever-widening gap between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates, spanning the Mid-Atlantic Ridge just a few feet above the volcanic sands that stand between the diverging continents. As the final optional part of the tour, discover one of the most popular places in Iceland, the iconic Blue Lagoon where milky sea waters contrast with black lava fields. Here, soak all your cares away for 2 hours at the Blue Lagoon SPA. Enjoy a perfect way to relax and reflect on an unforgettable day spent on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

What people are saying about Reykjanesbær

Great day! Our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful and we had a great day visiting all the volcanic areas. Sadly there was no active lava on view but you could still see a volcano smoking away after a recent eruption and the steaming, cooling lava fields below, very cool. Make sure you go to the loo before you start as it was a couple of hours into the tour before we hit ones that were open for use. Take food too! Ending the day in a hot geysir pool, in the snow, with arctic winds whipping around us at the Blue Lagoon was out of this World and an experience of a lifetime. Make sure you add this onto your tour! It's at least £75 to go to the pool and get a transfer separately so well worth adding it on. You'll appreciate it after the hike!

Most definitely my favourite tour of our trip! Our tour guide, Egill, is probably the reason why I enjoyed this tour so much. He is so knowledgeable and passionate about what he does that you could just listen to him talk about Iceland for hours. The tour isn't just for thr Volcano and Blue Lagoon, we were able to see hot springs, walk across tectonic plates, Valahnúkamöl and my favourite stop off being lava pools which isn't even part of the tour! The view we got of the Volcano was stunning, it wasn't active but amazing to see how far it stretched out. The blue lagoon is a must to go to. If im ever lucky enough to come back to Iceland this tour is the first thing I'm booking again.

Great sequence of events hiking up a volcano, seeing that scenery and then wrapping up with the Blue Lagoon? The absolutely perfect day with a great to guide to match!

Our guide James did an awesome job! It was a lot of fun! I highly recommend this trip!
