Start your tour in Akureyri and drive east towards the beautiful Goðafoss waterfall, where you'll make your first stop. The waterfall is a place of significant historic value from when Icelanders took Christianity. Continue east from Goðafoss; pass through the valley of Reykjadalur and head to Skútustaðir, where you'll see the pseudocraters.

Your next stop is the stunning lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Dimmuborgir was formed about 2300 years ago when a partly cooled lava lake drained out and left magnificent basalt pillars and sculptures. After a short walk in Dimmuborgir, travel to Grjótagjá, which was a popular underground bathing cave until the volcanic eruptions at Krafla 1975-1984. Those eruptions heated the water in the cave, so now it's too hot to bathe there.

Continue through the Námaskarð pass and go to the Hverarönd fumarole fields, a spectacular area showing the earth's inner power. Move further East towards Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall. Take a walk to the waterfall and spend a little time there.

Your trip now takes you to the North into the area of Hljóðaklettar, where you'll make a short stop and explore the area. After that, drive to Ásbyrgi, a magnificent horseshoe-shaped area thought to have been formed by Odin's horse Sleipnir as it put a foot down there. Head back towards Akureyri via Húsavík; if time, weather, and conditions allow, enjoy some good places to stop for pictures.
