Madeira: Full-Day Vereda do Larano Hiking Tour

2. Madeira: Full-Day Vereda do Larano Hiking Tour

This walk connects Machico to Porto da Cruz from an old footpath once used by the local people to move from one place to another to do business. The walk starts in the Levada dos Maroços, so the first part of the route is easy walking along a Levada followed with Mimosa trees and agricultural lands. After enjoying the fantastic views over Machico city, go up a trail to reach the viewpoint of Boca do Risco, where a superb view awaits you over the Atlantic Ocean as well as the Ponta de São Lourenço, the Penha d’Aguia and, if the weather permits, the Porto Santo Island.  After a short stop to refresh, continue your walk towards Porto da Cruz by a coastal path with fascinating views where you can observe some endemic specimens of Madeira. The route is quite narrow and vertiginous, being slippery during the wetter months, that’s why this trail is recommended for people used to hiking on mountains. On your way to Porto da Cruz, you can see one of the most iconic rock formations in Madeira, Penha D'Aguia, so prepare your camera to immortalize this moment in a photograph. After your walk, stop at the center of Porto da Cruz. Here, you will see a famous sugar cane mill where they extract juice from the sugar canes to be added to the brandy "aguardente” or to your typical honey cake.

Full-Day Ponta de São Lourenço Natural Reserve

3. Full-Day Ponta de São Lourenço Natural Reserve

This walk runs along the eastern peninsula of Madeira Island, where you can see different vegetation from the rest of the island with its lack of trees and low vegetation such as the Everlasting (Helichrysum devium Johns) and the Ice Flower (Mezembryanthenmum crystallinum).  The Ponta de São Lourenço is classified as a partial natural reserve and part of the European network of important community sites - Natura 2000. At this location, several protected seabirds such as the Cory's shearwater, the Madeiran storm-petrel, the Bulwer’s petrel and the common tern nest here. You can see other bird species such as the Berthelot's pipit, the goldfinch and the canary. Along the way, you will be amazed by the fantastic scenery with Deserted Islands to the south and the Islands of Porto Santo to the north (if the weather permits). From this walk, it is possible to see the northern and southern coasts of Madeira. When arriving to the end of this path, you will reach Casa do Sardinha. After a few minutes of rest, return by the same path.

A highly recommended day tour through a great landscape.

A very nice hike from Machico to Porto da Cruz through a beautiful landscape, beautiful views of the coastline of the east and not technically difficult as stated in the description. If the weather is right (dry) and you have a head for heights, then you can still walk with little hiking experience. We recommend !

Recommended visit if you want to enjoy a natural volcanic landscape, with conditioned, safe trails, a well-guided route with information about the environment you visit.

Very beautiful

A fabulous experience - very professional guides and excellent equipment.
