Things to do in Barri Gòtic

Founded by the Romans circa 133BC, "El Barri Gòtic" has been the historic and cultural heart of Barcelona ever since. More than just a hub for tourism, the Gothic Quarter has a little something for everyone. Here are a few tips before booking your tour!

Eating

Eating

The quarter boasts some of Barcelona's best restaurants – and its oldest, Can Culleretes! Try Bar Pinotxo's top-class tapas or the traditional curios saved from extinction at Agut.

Shopping

Shopping

The Gothic Quarter's shops and boutiques make spending money just a little too easy! Check out L'Arca de l'Àvia's antique homeware and the Catholic candy (yes, really!) at Caelum.

Sightseeing

Sightseeing

El Barri Gòtic's narrow streets are rich with history, from Barcelona Cathedral and the old Jewish quarter to La Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia – home to several of Gaudí's works!

Learning

Culture vultures will find plenty to stir the imagination at the quarter's museums. Highlights include the Barcelona City History Museum and the eccentric Museu Frederic Marès.

Drinking and Dancing

Despite its age, the area is no stranger to Barcelona's favorite cocktail! Check out Jamboree's Latin and jazz jams or catch Indie rock acts at Sidecar Factory Club.

Our insider tips

When to visit?

Barri Gòtic is one of Barcelona's busiest districts, so it might be best to avoid the tourist season if you can! Visiting in May or June will see shorter queues and better hotel availability without sacrificing the glorious weather.

Is it safe?

Like La Rambla, Barcelona's Gothic Quarter is a haven for pickpockets targeting tourists. Always keep your valuables out of sight and never leave your belongings unattended. Violent crime is not much of a concern, but if out sampling the area's nightlife – as with anywhere – it can't hurt to stick to populated, well-lit streets!

Good to know

  • When should I visit?
The Quarter is always open for a stroll and some people watching!
  • Is it expensive?
It's free to take in the views, but it'll be easy to spend money on food, souvenirs and entertainment!
  • Will I need a guide?
Why not? Might be worth it to check out these best-selling tours.
  • How to get there
This area is within walking distance from the old town and city center!
  • Additional information

    • Remain aware of your surroundings, as you would in any large city.

Sehr guter und engagierter Guide. Guter Aufbau des Ablaufs.

The German description I got ahead mentioned cava & tapas testing as part of the tour which was not the case and would not fit in timewise anyway. So please check and correct.

Barbara totally exceeded our expectations!

It was a great experience and Barbara gave us so much information. We wish we’d had done this our first night in Barcelona. Definitely go hungry because there were lots of wonderful tapas!

Amazing, fun & informative, a MUST for Barcelona city break! Thanks!

We booked this without too much thought, knowing our 3 teenage children were all good cyclists but we didn't consider big bikes and electric so our son, who has Downs syndrome struggled to get on with the bike at first. I was super impressed with our tour guide who instinctively offered a smaller bike, ran Toms bike back to the shop, collected new smaller bike and accommodated us so much. Its heart warming to feel so much support in the midst of a new city. The tour was amazing, fun, full of history and important facts that we wouldn't have known otherwise. I never dreamed 4 hours on a bike in a city could be so fun and relaxing. I felt safe and looked after throughout. The kids loved it too! After this experience, we will always do a bike tour on our city breaks from now on. Thank you so much to Barcelona E bike tours and our guide - Absolute Stars!

Informative and friendly. Made us feel very welcome in Barcelona.

Was a very informative tour, learnt a lot and in a welcoming, friendly atmosphere. Our guide was very passionate about his city and shared with us his extensive knowledge of history, legends and the city. Very enjoyable and would recommend. Thanks a lot.

A great way to explore and experience Barca

Barca is a beautiful city which you experience best by bike or by foot and bus. We did booth! The tour on bike was truly fantastic and one of the best things we did on our weekend in the city. You get a great overall grasp of the city in short time when biking around and the views from Montjuic is absolutely amazing. Our guide had all the knowledge and shared it in a fun and interesting way. He also gave a lot of recommendations for fun and food in the city. We absolutely recommend this trip!
