  • Etna: Guided Climbing Tour to Summit Craters

    1. Etna: Guided Climbing Tour to Summit Craters

Climb up Mount Etna and tour its summit craters with a guide. Take in rewarding views as you reach the top.

After a briefing at the mobile information point, your excursion will start, up to the top of Mount. Etna at 3,300 meters. Take the cable car to quickly gain altitude up to 2,500 meters and then with special 4x4 minibusses, go up to 2,900 meters, near Torre del Filosofo.  During the 2-hour ascent, take 2-3 intermediate breaks to enjoy the view. Travel through the lunar-looking lava fields that will lead you under the summit craters.

With a final demanding climb, reach the summit of Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Admire the peculiarities that characterize the summit area.  Descend on foot to the upper station of the cable car that will take you back to the starting point.

The trek was amazing. I couldn't fault the staff at all. Warm welcome and super interesting guides. We had Massimo who was a fantastic guide and knew an exceptional amount about the volcano. I'd highly recommend a trek if you feel up for it.

  • Catania: Etna Hiking Tour

    2. Catania: Etna Hiking Tour

Enjoy a hike on the highest, most active volcano in Europe. Start the tour with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Catania. Climb into a comfortable 4x4 vehicle and set off for Mount Etna. Arrive at the starting point for your off-the-beaten-track hike.

As you begin to walk, admire the fascinating landscape of the Valle del Bove, the biggest depression of Mount Etna, and its moonlike deserts. From there take in the breathtaking views of the smoking summit craters and the surrounding landscape facing the Ionian Sea.

The tour also includes the opportunity to explore a lava tube with helmets and flashlights. Experience the incredible natural phenomenon created when the surface lava solidified but magma continued to flow into the tunnel.

Finally, in the afternoon, get dropped off back in Catania...

  • Etna Upper Craters Day Tour from Taormina

    3. Etna Upper Craters Day Tour from Taormina

Be picked up at 8:30 AM and relax as you are driven to visit the highest volcano in Europe with its smoking peak seen throughout Sicily. Drive to the Mount Etna Refuge with the opportunity for refreshments as you ready yourself for further ascent.  Climb higher by cable car up to 2,500 meters and continuing on board jeeps up to the authorized crater zones at approximately 3,000 meters with the assistance of licensed Guides of the CAI, Italian Alpine Club. See the 4 distinct craters at the summit area and more than 300 vents on the flanks, ranging in size from small holes to large craters. Stop to admire the eventual activity of the summit craters in a safety zone according to weather conditions. Gazing over an active volcano, make memories sure to last a lifetime.

We enjoyed our tour in general, but most of the time we were driving in a bus, taking the cable cart or driving in a mountain bus. Though we didn't need to stand in a line to cable cart or mountain bus for too long, traveling took way too much time. We had less than an hour up at 2900 meters and it was just enough to take a guided tour around a crater, but not enough to explore. All that trouble for a mere 45 mins up the mountain was a bit of a disappointment. Going higher up the mountain was of course forbidden. The mountain guide who walked us around one crater was very informative and multilingual. Our own guide was very pleasant, efficient and attentive. She spoke the whole drive up and down in three languages. The bus driver was amazingly skillful and drove that monster bus like a.. well.. a pro. We had cloudy weather so no breathtaking views down, but the summit was clearly visible from 2900 and we were quite pleased to see it.

  • Etna 4x4 Half Day Tour

    4. Etna 4x4 Half Day Tour

The half-day excursion includes an easy walk to the impressive Monte Fontana and a visit of the famous valley Valle del Bove. Wander through old and new lava flows, walk on extinct craters, and visit a real lava cave equipped with helmets and flashlights, where ice was produced centuries ago. Your guide will show you the great variety of flora and fauna here - plants and animals which populate the active volcano. While walking through ancient forests you will learn a lot about the vegetation and the wildlife of Mount Etna. Your last stop of the half-day tour will be around the cold lava streams of Piano Provenzana, which were destroyed during the last big eruption in 2002. At the end of the tour you will be driven back to your accommodation. Altogether this will be an unforgettable experience.

Great guide who took good care of us. Fab landscapes. Fun drive. Good talks about volcano and local stuff, wines, mushrooms. An excellent half day!

We were picked up at 10.30am by Roberto, our tour guide. As we sped along in his battered Ford he explained about the lava, it's use in building and architecture,it's fertile minerals, the importance of the sun,the wind, the rain and the old ways of making wine. We started with a small producer, meeting up with two other couples and their guides. We sampled a white, a rose and two reds, all generously poured, the perfumed white proved to be our favourite of the day. Next we went to a slightly bigger outfit where we sat down at tables and were given a light meal of foccacia, sun-dried tomatoes, aubergine pickled with celery, olives marinated with fennel, small slices of salami and cubes of cheese. Still only the three couples, we sampled a white, a rose, two reds and a red dessert wine. Lastly we went to the Gambino estate, the panoramic view was simply stunning.Pleasantly full and slightly stupified we relaxed in the back of the Ford instead worrying about the cracked windscreen!
