Top sights in Prague
This sprawling UNESCO World Heritage Site was once the seat of the ancient Kings of Bohemia. Today, it is the most significant Czech monument and an important cultural institution in the Czech Republic. Here are some interesting factual tidbits about this Central European marvel.
With an area of about 215,000 ft² (over 18 acres!), Prague Castle is the largest medieval castle in the world!
Housed within the castle complex is the magnificent St. Vitus Cathedral. An amazing example of Gothic architecture, it remains one of the most important churches in the country.
Due to hundreds of years of political changeovers and ever-shifting cultural influences, the castle complex features broad mix of architectural styles, from Romanesque to ornate Baroque.
This small musical group (not in fact a full orchestra in residence) play outside the gates of the castle regularly for tourists and are worth hearing on your visit!
As Prague Castle is the official residence and office of the President of the Czech Republic, a Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place each day on the hour.
The opening times vary throughout the year, so be sure to check the website before you visit. The Courtyards are open Apr-Oct: Daily 5:00AM - Midnight; Nov - Mar: Daily: 6:00AM - 11:00PM. Prague Castle Buildings (Interiors): Apr - Oct: Daily 9:00AM - 5:00PM; Nov - Mar: Daily 9:00AM-4:00PM.
With the castle complex being so large and so much housed within it, tours are advised. You can go on a guided tour, or take an audio tour and enjoy discovering the castle for yourself.
There are different ticket options depending on how much of the castle complex you want to see. The most extensive option, which they call Circuit A, costs 350 CZK (about 15 US dollars). The discounted price for youth and seniors is 175 CZK and family admission is 700 CZK.

What people are saying about Prague Castle
I'll start off by saying that when I booked this activity (we went Tuesday, October 1st), I thought I'd booked a segway tour of the castle district (my fault, I'd gotten confused between this tour and another one) - but, having said that, I was glad in the end that I DID book this tour because it was an excellent way to see the (very large) Prague Castle complex and its various buildings/sections, mostly thanks to our local guide who was very informative but also very entertaining. It was refreshing to have a live tour guide, after having done so many audioguide tours by that point!
We purchased the tickets just 30 minutes before the tour started. The meeting point was easy to find with GPS turned on. Our tour guide Alishka was so so great! She gave us all the information we needed to have a general understanding of what we were seeing in Prague Castle. She got us inside quickly and walked us through the main areas to explore. I would definitely recommend this tour! Especially if you choose Alishka for your English tour guide!
Tour did not start 30 minutes until after start time and spent time tour other locations instead of the castle. It was very cold and rainy on the day of the tour. The tour was late getting started. Then the tour guide spent time giving a tour of areas other than the castle on the way to catch the tram to the castle. Recommend the tour start promptly and skip areas other the castle during the cold rain.
Jana's use of languages was excellent. Her ability to change from one language to another was so slick it felt as though she was speaking in one language we all understood. Her explanation of the sights we were viewing brought them to life and she was very willing to answer questions which occurred. We didn't feel rushed and she included rest room time. She was amazing.
The tour was very interesting and included a lot of information. The guide was well informed and spoken and patient with the crowds. Her stories were historically significant and kept everyone involved. She created a safe environment and always ensured she knew where everyone was as the palace was very crowded. This tour is worth taking.
