Great War Flanders Fields Minibus Tour from Bruges

1. Great War Flanders Fields Minibus Tour from Bruges

Enjoy a trip of historical discovery on this full-day minibus tour that takes you through West Flanders, from Bruges to the Belgian town of Ypres. The city, nicknamed Wipers, was rebuilt according to a medieval blueprint after being completely razed to the ground in the early 1900s. It was also here that the Germans invaded Belgium during World War I; a strategic move to attack France from the north. You will see the remaining artifacts and places of the city as you discover restored trenches, stroll among war graves in Passchendale and Polygon Wood, clamber over craters and bunkers on the preserved battlefield, and visit key war memorials.  Behold the impressive sight of the imposing Menin Gate Memorial to the missing soldiers, complete with 55,000 names, erected on the spot where the soldiers left the city for the battlefront. As your day continues you will also see the iconic poppy fields of Flanders as you ride through the countryside in an air-conditioned mini coach, perfect for relaxing and taking in the picturesque scenery. It is possible to visit an ancestor's grave if requested ahead, and it is also possible to extend the tour for the Last Post Ceremony under the Menin Gate Memorial with transport back to your hotel in Bruges.  This must be requested in advance as well and will incur a fee of €15 to be paid on the day of the tour.

Day Trip from Paris to Ypres Salient, Flanders

2. Day Trip from Paris to Ypres Salient, Flanders

Pay your respects to the 185,000 Commonwealth soldiers who sacrificed their lives at the Ypres Salient, one of World War I's hardest fought-over stretches of the Western Front. Through its memorials, cemeteries, and battlefield remnants, Ypres represents one of the most dramatic periods of 20th-century history, a terrain stained by devastating modern brutality. Discover the horrors of war, and its very real heroes and villains, through the area's humbling landmarks: John McCrae's Essex Farm site; Langemark, the German cemetery; Vancouver Corner, the Canadian memorial; Tyne Cot cemetery, Passchendaele; Polygon Wood, the Australian memorial; Saint George's Chapel; and the Menin Gate Memorial. Join a day of remembrance for the many who died at Ypres between 1914 and 1918, in what was once “the war to end all wars.”

What people are saying about Polygon Wood

I found the tour incredibly interesting. The guide was obviously an expert, and he brought every place we saw to life with anecdotes and history. His comments were well-informed, helpful and often very moving. I decided to stay for the Last Post at the Menin Gate, and that was a good decision as it gave me a couple of hours to see Ypres on my own, pop into some shops, and eat on the Market Square. I was back in my hotel in Bruges at 9pm, so this was a full 12 hour day. Worth every Euro. In fact, the best thing I have done all holiday. I normally do not join tours, but this was the only practical way for me to see so many key sights in Flanders Field. Highly, highly recommended.

Fantastic experience. A small company who personalise the tour and experience for all those taking part. They will ensure collection and drop off of you are not staying near the group pick up point, which was really helpful for a solo female traveller like me. Phillippe is knowledgable and friendly. The lunch stop and museum are good and well timed. Take the offer to stay for the Last Post at the Menin Gate if you can. It’s worth it.

Highly recommend this tour. Very knowledgeable guide. Well organised and great itinerary. It’s a great way to visit the main places, and definitely got more out of it than if I’d tried to do similar on my own. Thank you!

Picked up on time by tour guide, the guide was full if knowledge really enjoyed this trip..amazing

Fantastic! My wife hates history and even she loved the tour!
