Full description
See for yourself the profound scars left on the landscape of Verdun, where one of the First World War's most harrowing battles left over 700,000 French and German soldiers dead, wounded, or missing. The Hell of Verdun began on 21 February 1916, and lasted for 300 bloody days and nights. Not until the end of the war was the entire territory recaptured thanks to a massive onslaught of 1.3 million American troops. The day's excursion covers such landmarks as the Ossuary of Douaumont, Fort Douaumont, the Trench of Bayonets, and the “London Trench,” before heading to the Argonne for lunch and a tour of the battlefields where General Pershing's American Expeditionary Force became embroiled in the conflict. Visit the War Museum in Romagne and, of course, the Meuse-Argonne's US Cemetery – the largest American cemetery in Europe, where more than 14,000 graves dot the huge hillside with white crosses.
