Full description

A masterpiece created by Soufflot (1713-1780) and a former church, the Panthéon became the burial place for famous French personalities from the French Revolution. Spend an hour visiting this important monument on a skip-the-line self-guided tour.

A major exhibition at the Panthéon pays tribute to Jacques-Germain Soufflot, one of the greatest French architects. It presents his career and his monumental achievements, the most famous being the royal Church of Sainte-Geneviève, the current Panthéon. The architect achieved Louis XV's desire to glorify the monarchy in church form dedicated to Saint Geneviève. The edifice was deconsecrated during the French Revolution in 1791 and renamed the Panthéon. During the turbulent 19th century, it shifted between a religious and patriotic monument.

Since Victor Hugo's death in 1885, the Panthéon has been the resting place for French writers, scientists, generals, clergymen, and politicians. The crypt houses the tombs of 70+ illustrious figures including Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Emile Zola, Alexandre Dumas, Pierre, and Marie Currie.

From the recently restored upper floors, you can enjoy superb views across the city (from April to October).

The Pantheon is phenomenal. You do not need to buy an audioguide as all the information is all over the exhibits with french and English! It is quite stunning, the history is phenomenal, and the architecture is immense. The crypt is interesting with famous French people such as Dumas, Hugo, Zola, etc.

Self guided tour was a great experi

The ticket did not include the audio player which was an additional 3 euro. The audio player was a lttle hassle and I might skip it next time. Also I think the audio player accepted earphones so this would have been helpful to have with but I didn't at the time. I wish the audio was more specific and less general. The whole tour is about an hour.

Cool but better stuff out there

I liked the Pantheon and thought is was cool. Cool to see the resting place of Dumas, Hugo, Voltaire, Curie but all in all there are cooler things to see in Paris and I would put other sites first. There are tablets in the crypt that give you background and history on most of the people which is cool. I ordered our skip tickets on my phone in the regular line and then jumped right to the front. Saved us about 30 min of standing in the heat.
