A journey through the Opéra Garnier

8. A journey through the Opéra Garnier

Welcome to the Opéra Garnier, the most beautiful opera house in Paris. Constructed between 1861 and 1875, its fourteen-year construction was plagued by uncertainty, but its majesty was finally revealed to the burgeoning Third Republic at the very beginning of the Belle Époque. It has also inspired the famous play, 'The Phantom of the Opera'. During our tour, we will start by discussing the main façade, which although under construction, still has many wonderful monuments to see. We will then head into the Opera itself, starting off with the Grand Staircase, before proceeding into the Salons of the Sun and Moon and the Grand Foyer. Depending on the opera schedule, if there are no rehearsals or shows taking place, we may also get to see into the Grand Auditorium with its frescoes painted by Marc Chagall. In the case that this section is closed, we will explore alternative parts of the building, bearing in mind that there are currently renovation works taking place. After working as a tour guide for five years in Paris now, I have decided to work exclusively with private groups. If you book a tour with me, feel free to let me know of any particular interests you may have and I will incorporate it into our tour. My goal is to adapt the tour to you and to make sure you have the best time possible. I would be thrilled to join you on your discovery of this hidden gem in Paris.
