Whether you're joining one of the many guided bike tours in Paris or planning your own route around the city, here are five tips to make sure it goes beautifully.
This is both the most important rule and the one you're least likely to adhere to. You might regret it transitioning between Paris' tranquil alleys and chaotic roundabouts!
Aside from the obvious ones like always stopping at red lights, make sure you're fully aware of French traffic laws and try to keep an eye out for Parisian driving quirks!
Paris is a wonderful city to explore, but that just makes it easier to get lost in! Whether it's on paper or your phone, make sure you always have the means to find your way.
Even if you don't generally use a bell, make sure the one on your rented bike is working and learn how to use it. With all the tourists, scooters, cars, and buses, you'll need it!
Want the streets to yourself? Get up before the rest of the city does. Sunday is especially good for it, but watch out for broken glass not yet cleared up from the night before!
Just as it is to wander by foot, Paris is also a terrific place to cycle. Cycling accidents are relatively uncommon compared to other major cities, but we'd advise staying clear of the Arc de Triomphe for a stress-free ride!
If you'd rather go your own way, why not take advantage of Vélib – the city's official bike rental system. It incorporates almost 20,000 bicycles across 1,200 stations. You'll need to pay a subscription – €1.70 a day or €8 for a week – and a rental fee on top of that. The first half-hour is free!

We've taken bike tours in many European cities and this was, hands down, the best one we've ever been on! Simon was absolutely incredible as an energetic, funny, informative, engaging guide and took us through hidden courtyards, parks and paths along the Seine, past the most picture worthy spots, and was full of fascinating stories and hilarious lesser known facts at stops all across Paris. We had a group of 7 that included adults, teenagers and even a 10 year old, and they had various sized bikes for everyone, all of which said that this was their very favorite day and activity in Paris. We will definitely book one of their other tours on our next visit!
We had a great time on the tour with Cedric who was a fantastic guide. It was my first time riding with a child on my back (even though I have been a parent for 16 years) and I had my 2 younger children with me and Cedric was wonderful at adapting the tour to suit us and our situation. He was a wealth of knowledge about Paris and we enjoyed the tour with him.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Parisian e-bike tour. Pierre had lots of energy and was highly knowledgable, keeping us entertained with lots of fun historical stories. We covered lots of ground and were perfectly comfortable on the bikes on a very hot day. I’d recommend bringing a bottle of water all the same.
This was a really great tour. Simon was our guide and due to only 3 people being on the tour we got a mixture of the monuments tour and hidden Paris tour plus extended time to explore Paris. Definitely worth the money! Emily, who was involved in organizing the tour was extremely kind as well.
Highly recommend this tour. Our tour guide was suberb. He was engaging and funny and it’s a fantastic way to see and learn a bit more about Paris. Go!
