The Top 5 Highlights of the Palace of Versailles

It's hardly surprising that the Palace of Versailles attracts over 10 million visitors per year – it's one of the most majestic places on earth, no exaggeration. Every nook and cranny is worth exploring, but if time is tight, here are the highlights.

Hall of Mirrors

Hall of Mirrors

This is the palace's most resplendent room. Each of its 17 arched windows is decorated with 21 mirrors, resulting in a stunning spectacle as light is reflected off 357 mirrors!

The Royal Chapel

The Royal Chapel

Though it's just one of five chapels in the palace, this opulent architectural wonder is by far the most breathtaking. Marie Antoinette's wedding took place here.

The Grand Apartments

The Grand Apartments

Lavishly decorated from top to bottom, the king's apartments are absolutely ravishing -- you'll deem them to be "fit for a king."

The Clock Room

This room's 250-year-old clock is a technical marvel. Not only does it show the time, date, and even the phases of the moon, but it also features a working model of the solar system!

The Gardens

The Gardens

With its impeccable lawns, geometric flower beds, rows of statues, and ornamental lakes, the splendor of the palace's gardens rivals even the most ornate interiors.

Our insider tips

Avoid Mondays

When planning your visit to the Palace of Versailles, keep in mind that the palace is closed on Mondays. On every other day, the visiting hours are from 9:00am to 5:30pm, and from April until October, they're extended to 6:30pm.

Get there early

You'll be amazed by the size of the Palace of Versailles and the sheer amount there is to see. Even if you just stick to the above highlights, you'll want to give yourself ample time. On the other hand, if you intend to see everything, you may even consider spreading your visit over more than one day trip.

Fountain Show

The Palace of Versailles' musical fountain shows are quite simply awe-inspiring. They're held from April until October, on every weekend and public holiday from 11:00am to 12:00pm and again from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. It's absolutely worth scheduling your visit for the fountain shows.

Versailles is amazing, skip the line guided tour was worth it

Versailles is amazing but what a great service from our tour guides. A friendly greeting in Paris at the meeting point, great chaperone on the metro to ensure we got to Versailles safely and in great time. Then onto our guided tour with Phillipe in the rooms at Versailles- he was so knowledgeable and his tour was full of interesting facts and humour. Best tour guide ever ! Highly recommend this tour, booking was easy and really liked the fact you then had time to yourselves to enjoy the exhibitions, gardens and grounds at your own pace and could choose when to return to Paris. No trouble finding a seat on the Train at Versailles heading back even though lots of people leaving after water fountain show. Merci

Unbelievably reasonably priced and our guide was fantastic!

Don’t post this...it is meant to help you improve...Figure out a way to give us reasonable time to use the bathroom when we arrive. They gave us five minutes at a McDonalds at Versailles and we had to figure out they we needed to buy something to get the bathroom code. Then, some little girl (employee) started hawking Philip, our tour guide, to leave and he was forced to leave two families behind when he left for the front gate. The two families were escorted up to our group but they were very mad, disgusted and disappointed that they were left behind. This will lead to bad “word of mouth” stories all because that little girl made Philip go without his people.

Ticket wasn’t worth it but the place itself is fantastic

The line of people with tickets was roughly x4 the size of the no ticket line. We got there around 9:15 but didn’t get in until about 10:50. There’s only one security screening which was ridiculous considering the amount of people coming in. We went on a Saturday so maybe we just got unlucky but if I was to do it again, I think I’d buy the ticket there or get there at 8:15/8:30 for 9:00 opening. The palace itself was incredible but they let fair too many people in so it does ruin the atmosphere and makes it extremely hard to stop and enjoy. Would recommend hiring a golf cart but get in the line early

Georgia was the most amazing guide, we had the best day!

Georgia was the most amazing, passionate and knowledgeable guide, her presentations on Monet made the day so enjoyable. Despite a record breaking heat wave in Paris, everyone went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and enjoying ourselves. I would highly recommend

Best way to explore Versailles...Amazing tour

A really great tour with the perfect guide. You feel how much NATASHA loves what she is doing and always be helpfully and answer all questions. Just don't forget a jacket (even in summer) as quite a big part of the tour is in the shadow of the trees in Versailles garden.
