Padua: Self-Guided Walking Tour of the Historical Center

6. Padua: Self-Guided Walking Tour of the Historical Center

Situated between Venice and Verona, Padua is known as the city of St Anthony. On this walking tour I’ll show you how the city has been able to preserve its artistic and cultural heritage, and why the city is famous for being hospitable. Even when the city was founded in 1222, its prestigious university welcomed students of any religion. And artists and scientists such as Donatello, Giotto, Galileo Galilei and others found a second home here too. The Jews fleeing persecution from Spain, Portugal and northern Europe also settled here, creating one of the most diverse and interesting Italian ghettos, still intact today. Highlights along our walk include: • Prato della Valle, the largest square in Italy • St Anthony Square with Donatello’s statue of Gattamelata • The Tomb of Antenor • Imposing Palazzo della Ragione with its large frescoes depicting an astrological cycle • Local markets • The Arch of the Rope where dishonest traders were punished • Torre dell'Orologio, one of the most beautiful clock towers ever built • The old Jewish ghetto with its small squares, narrow streets and three synagogues • The stumbling stones in the Jewish ghetto • Bo Palace, the seat of University of Padua, the second oldest in Italy, which houses Galileo's original desk Join me in following the paths of these artists and thinkers, and find yourself inspired by Padua’s timeless atmosphere.

Venice: Guided Night Walking Tour & Saint Mark's Basilica

7. Venice: Guided Night Walking Tour & Saint Mark's Basilica

With its awe-inspiring array of domes, arches and turrets, there is no mistaking St. Mark’s basilica. Dominating the piazza of the same name, St. Mark’s stands at the very epicentre of the city. And it looks even more spectacular at night. On our night tour of St. Mark’s, you’ll meet your guide in beautiful St. Mark’s Square, for centuries the spiritual and political centre of Venice - the Doge’s palace also stands silent watch over the piazza. To start our tour, your guide will explain the significance of the square to the history and geography of the city - for good reason Napoleon described the Piazza as the ‘drawing room of Europe,’ and the elegant cafes that line the square, including Caffe Quadri and famous Caffe Florian, have lost none of their old-world charm. During our time in the piazza we’ll learn about some of the other highlights on show here, including the stunning Torre dell’Orologio - a Renaissance clock tower decorated with fabulous sculptures, as well as St. Mark’s Campanile, the soaring 12th-century brick bell tower that is still the tallest building in Venice.

Our guide Isaiah was highly engaging and very knowledgable ! He expertly answered many detailed questions that I had about the history and Jewish sites of Padua. The museum is in the synagogue where many great Jewish scholars (R. Judah Mintz, Maharam Padua, R. Moshe Chaim Luzzatto) studied and prayed. The sense of Jewish History, aided by character videos, is palpable and was extremely inspiring ! The second synagogue on the tour, which is actively used by the community, is stately and beautiful. When in Padua, plan a tour of the University of Padua, which is 800 years old, one of the first Universities open to Jews, and is the birthplace of Anatomy and many other medical discoveries ! You can also tour the Jewish cemeteries on certain days/times. Padua and the Jewish museum are well worth a visit !

Mario brought us to two fantastic places for great food and wine pairings (gluten free as we requested). We learned about the wine and the city and very much enjoyed his company. We look forward to doing more tours with him in the future; he knows so much about wine we would love to find another experience to share!!

Catia is a delightful host, who loves to share her impressive knowledge of Italian cooking. We made pasta with her grandmother’s machine! The food was excellent. She even shared her special recipe for tiramisu!

As someone who loves and appreciates history I loved every single minute of it, Our tour guide was so friendly and informative and we really had a great time! Highly recommend for history lovers!

Wonderful day, excellent organization, courteous and prepared guides.
