One of Ostia Antica’s most striking sights is the grand outdoor theater which hosted plays and even gladiator fights. See the Square of the Guilds, where ship owners and merchants tried to make their fortune. Just down the street are the public bath houses where people would lounge in pools, work out and clean themselves with olive oil. Walk to the House of Diana and see where the ancients laid their heads at night.  Your guide will reveal this ancient city and uncover its stories on an unforgettable journey back in time.

Hear about its role as a river port that acquired a commercial function to supply Rome with foodstuffs, particularly wheat, even if its strategic military function as a naval base certainly prevailed.  Learn about how the city was later surrounded by a new circle of walls that circumscribed an urban area of about 50 hectares, divided into five regions or neighborhoods. 8. From Rome: Ostia Antica Ruins

Your private driver will pick you up from your accommodation in central Rome and, in about 45 minutes, you’ll reach Ostia Antica where you’ll first tour the ruins (skip-the-line tickets included). Be led by an official licensed tour guide. The ancient Roman city of Ostia was in antiquity situated at the mouth of the river Tiber, some 30-kilometers to the west of Rome. The shoreline moved seawards due to silting from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. Therefore, Ostia is today still lying next to the Tiber. The river was used as harbor, but in the Imperial period, two harbor basins were added to the north, near Leonardo da Vinci Airport. The harbor district was called Portus, Latin for "harbor." This tour focuses on some of the archaeological remains of Imperial Ostia and Portus. Then you’ll spend some time visiting by yourself the wonderful medieval neighborhood near the ruins, stopping for lunch at your own expense. At the end of the tour, sit back, relax and enjoy your short drive back to your hotel in Rome. The duration of your tour is about 7 hours and you can expect to be back at your hotel around 16:00, depending on local traffic.

Wow, Maria Rita gave us an excellent tour of Ostia Antica! She met us outside the ticket office and proceeded to give the four of us a thoroughly fascinating experience. Maria had pictures to show us as we toured to give even more perspective and history. This site was not crowded, so we were able to find private spots to hear her explanations, take plenty of pictures, and imagine what life was like when this city was a thriving port. So much better than overcrowded Pompeii. Maria is an engaging, knowledgeable archeologist who imparted her enthusiasm for Ostia Antica during this wonderful tour.

Maria did an excellent job of explaining the history and architecture of Ostia Antica as we walked through the ruins. She used visual aids to help us imagine how it looked centuries ago and to increase our understanding. She is not only very knowledgeable about Ostica Antica having worked on the site as an archaeologist but also an excellent communicator and teacher to someone who knows nothing about archaeology or Ostica Antica. We highly recommend this tour.

It was a great experince. Discover Ostia Antica with Maria is a journey to the past. Maria makes the archaeological site alive again. I can only recommend to visit Ostia Antica; it is not as crowded then the sites in Rome and you get a good impression about romain cities.

Maria Rita was an excellent Guide. She was knowledgeable, professional and polite. She was happy to answer questions and kept the exchange flowing. The tour itself was done at a very good pace.

Maria Rita was very knowledgeable and entertaining. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and would highly recommend!
