Oaxaca: Mezcal Adventure

2. Oaxaca: Mezcal Adventure

During this experience, you'll be taken through the Valley of Tlacolula to Santiago Matalan. During the ride, you'll be introduced to the culture of mezcal and its geographical context. Once in Santiago Matatlán, you'll be visiting an agave plantation to learn about these plants, their life cycle, varieties, and uses. Then, visit two different mezcal distilleries to see real production going on. From a home scale family-owned business with a long tradition of making mezcal in a rustic way to another way of production more sophisticated, yet artisanal. As each maestro mezcalero gives a personal touch to every batch, each tasting on-site means immersion in the mezcal culture. Afterward, you'll make a stop for lunch in a nice and neat last distillery with a great local cuisine restaurant. By this point of the trip, you'll already know how to taste mezcal as an expert. The premium quality mezcal you’ll taste here will be great for a last toast before heading back home.

What people are saying about Oaxaca de Juarez

We had the most amazing time on this tour. We were taken to 3 mezcal factories of different sizes and got many tastings of mezcal. I didn't keep count but it was easily over 10. Our favorite part was the ride through the agave fields where we got to drink mezcal from a maguey leaf. We had already done 5 mezcal tastings at various mezcalerias in Oaxaca before going on this tour. I wish we had done this tour first as we learned quite a bit about mezcal. We would have appreciated all that mezcal even more. Highly recommended!

We had such a great time with Alberto and all of the people we met along the way! It was a gloomy and rainy day but we loved the walk/hike at Hierve El Agua with a local guide (Spanish speaking). We loved the tapestry/rug shop and were able to purchase a few items. The home style lunch was one of our favorite meals of the whole trip, and, of course, the mezcal tasting was a lot of fun. It was a long day, so be prepared, but definitely worth experiencing the best of Oaxaca in a single day.

It was an amazing day. Meplorer and our guide, Edd were terrific. Not only did we taste a lot of Mezcal, but the tour was also very informative and educational. We tried 3 different Mezcal establishments - all different sizes which was great. We also had a wonderful lunch stop. Edd was extremely interesting and our driver was also great. The day was filled with laughs. I highly recommend this tour if you want to learn and taste Mezcal.

A complete and very comprehensive path on all Mezcal processing processes, from cultivation in the fields to final production. Personally I found the stop at Don Agave really interesting where Angel also explained in a pertinent way how to do a real tasting. Super recommended tour!

Fantastic time great guide, good traportation. Totally enjoyable full day tour
