Cologne: Guided Tour of Melatenfriedhof

1. Cologne: Guided Tour of Melatenfriedhof

Take a trip through the history of Cologne on a guided tour of Melatenfriedhof, the central cemetery of the city. Before it became a cemetery, it was already an execution site and leprosy ward far outside the city walls. Follow your guide around the 5500 graves. Listen to stories about the history of the city, and the celebrities who have been laid to rest in this historical graveyard.

Executioner's Tour of Cologne in German

2. Executioner's Tour of Cologne in German

Who could practice the profession of an executioner? When did an executioner receive his master craftsman’s diploma, which enabled him to let heads roll on behalf of the state? Who exiled lepers and plague-infested harlots? Who walked through medieval dark alleys and killed wild dogs and stray hogs? Who burnt spell books and could build gallows? The executioner – somebody had to do it!  Join a medieval headsman on a bloodcurdling guided tour of 1.5 hours, leading you through Cologne’s historic centre. Find out what could go wrong during an execution and how a headsman supplemented his own low income as a knacker, dog-catcher or gold-seeker.  Learn all the gory and grisly details... if you dare to join.

Cologne: Haunted Witch Hunt Game

3. Cologne: Haunted Witch Hunt Game

Solve clues and unlock horror stories as you roam Cologne' haunted streets. Each clue will lead you from one place to another, giving you precise directions so that you won't need a map, GPS, or guide. After you purchase the quest, you'll receive instructions on how to play by e-mail. The quest will take you between 1-2 hours to complete, but there's no time limit which will allow you to have fun playing at your own pace. Throughout the quest, you will explore Cologne in the shoes of someone that is being hunted by ghosts. The game was created by a professional screenwriter, who wrote even scripts for Netflix movies. For larger groups, one person can purchase access for the entire group by selecting the number of people in the group. All group members will be able to play the city game on their smartphone. Alternatively, each person can purchase their own ticket. You can play as a group and solve the clues together as you walk, or you can split into smaller groups/teams and compete against the others. Each person can also play on their own, separate from the group, and meet the group at the end.

How the Magi Came to Cologne – Myths and Legends

4. How the Magi Came to Cologne – Myths and Legends

Why is there a curse upon Cologne Cathedral? What is it about Cologne’s patron saint, Saint Ursula, who was accompanied by eleven thousand virgins during her pilgrimage? Why did the Cologne Heinzelmännchen leave the city for good? Cologne is full of places connected with tales and legends, both well-known and lesser-known, some told since the Middle Ages, some of more recent origins. Yet they all have one thing in common: most legends have some basis in the truth or they mirror the wishes, fears, and ideas of the people from the time when they were first told. Listen to old legends and get an insight into the life and the world of ideas in former times during a walking tour through the old city center. Of course, you will find out, why and how the relics of the Magi got to Cologne.

What people are saying about North Rhine-Westphalia

I actually wanted a horror event like a dungeon (Hamburger Dungeon or London Dungeon), but unfortunately there is no such thing in Cologne, so I looked for alternatives. This is where I came across this guide. It was rated a little worse in mid-2021, which puzzled me. After a long time back and forth between the night watchman leadership and the executioner leadership, I decided for myself and my brothers (20-28 years) for the executioner leadership. ATTENTION: This tour is not frightening in the form of jump scares or creepy surprises (such as in a dungeon), but it is frightening what has happened in Cologne. The stories are sometimes creepy to disgusting, which is why they absolutely deserve FSK 18. The company Kölngeflüster is a really fascinating company that has come up with some ingenious things to tell historical history in a different way.

Very good and interesting tour of the Melaten cemetery. The guide Markus can only be recommended. He made the tour entertaining, with a lot of information and with a good sense of humor. Our 16-year-old daughter also liked it because history was conveyed in a relaxed and interesting way. Also for people from Cologne only to be recommended. We will definitely book another tour from Markus again. Many thanks to Markus for the great 2 hours.

Today we enjoyed a very entertaining and informative guided tour of the Melaten cemetery in the most beautiful weather (ok, the guide couldn't do anything about that, but luck is with the brave!). Mr. Markus Zens turned the place of the dead into a living place of Cologne history with humorous stories. Thank you and highly recommended!

Great trip. Very interesting to hear about well known Cologne persons.
