Húsavík: Big Whales and Puffin Island Tour

6. Húsavík: Big Whales and Puffin Island Tour

After checking in in the ticket office, be escorted to the dressing room to receive warm water-resistant overalls and life vests. Sit back and peel your eyes across the rocking waves of the Atlantic, looking for any sign of life. Make sure to bring hats and gloves—it's always colder in the bay than in the town. When everybody is ready the guide will show the way to the boat where passengers will find their seats and get informed about safety regulations on board. The first pit-stop is Puffin Island (during puffin season which is from 1st May- 20th August). Circle around the Island, enjoying the view of thousands of sweet-looking puffins during their breeding period. The next destination is whale watching in Skjálfandi Bay, an area renowned for its rich wildlife, Víknafjöll and Kinnarfjöll mountain ranges. There are 20 different species of cetacean in Iceland, the most common being Humpback and Minke whales. There is a chance to spot rarer species like Orcas, Harbour Porpoises, Blue Whales, etc. With a smaller vessel like a RIB, your captain can get much closer to where these animals swim as small boats make less noise, and are less likely to deter whales. After 2 hours of cruising the ocean, begin the return journey back to the harbor. On your way, you will likely pass one of the numerous nesting Puffin colonies that live in the area—just another fantastic reason to come aboard. So don't delay any longer. Hurry now and you too can go whale watching in Húsavík using the nimble RIB boat. Check availability by choosing a date.

This tour was definitely a highlight of our trip to Iceland! Our guide was amazing and he told us that they had spotted a place with lots of whales the same morning! We saw more than 10 hampback whales! It was absolutely amazing. We were all very quite, watching the whales diving and showing us their tails! Very emotional moment, I almost cried! On the way back they offered us hot cacao and cinnamon rolls to warm up. We felt blessed for this experience!

We went on a tour in November, so it was really cold, but the crew gave us overalls and an extra coat to protect us from the water splashes. At the beginning, we didn't manage to see a lot of whales, but the crew decided to stay on the water longer to give us a chance of seeing whales. In the end we got lucky and managed to see a whale for a full minute from close by. Truly a great experience!

We went at the end of the whale season so our expectations were very low but the crew knew exactly where to go and we got lucky. They were very informative and provided us with warm clothing and hot chocolate. Pictures don't do them justice!

Frankly nothing better, we saw the whales 5 or 6 times and this company is great, he made us stay longer because there were whales, I really recommend you!

Excellent adventure-saw two humpback whales -an experience I will never forget!
