De grootse legende van Lanzarote, Cesar Manrique, heeft overal op het eiland zijn sporen nagelaten, maar nergens meer dan in het noorden. De architect werd geïnspireerd door de buitengewone geologie van de regio. Op deze tour ga je langs drie van zijn werken - de Groene Grotten, Jameos del Agua en Mirador del Rio. David, een van onze lokale gidsen, zegt: "Het noorden van het eiland was een canvas voor Manrique's palet. Zoals hij placht te zeggen: "Het noorden is nog steeds het traditionele Lanzarote".

Eerst bezoek je de Groene Grotten, waar een doolhof van galerijen en trappen je naar een natuurlijk auditorium leidt. Deze grotten - tot nu toe zijn er 16 ontdekt - zijn luchtbellen die met elkaar verbonden zijn door een tunnel die is ontstaan door de lavastroom van een vulkaanuitbarsting. Manrique heeft een grote rol gespeeld bij de aanpassing van het grottenstelsel voor bezoekers. Je ziet zijn invloed nog duidelijker in de Jameos del Agua. Hier harmoniseerde hij deze dakloze vulkanische grot door rotstuinen en een glasachtig meer toe te voegen, gevuld met blinde, witte krabben die alleen op Lanzarote voorkomen.

Dan staat Mirador del Rio op de agenda, een van Manrique's meest sci-fi-achtige creaties. Niet alleen gaat dit uitkijkpunt naadloos op in de omgeving op de top van een 470 meter hoge klif, maar je hebt er ook een episch uitzicht over La Graciosa. Vervolgens ga je naar Haria voor een lunch met streekproducten in een typisch Canarisch huis. Ook stop je nog tussendoor om het beroemde 'rode huis' in het vissersdorp Arrieta te bekijken.

A disappointing start to the day, we missed breakfast for a 8.10 pickup to find after a large number of stops we had to swop coaches at Teguise some two hours later. The swop coach was delayed and there was a total mix up on European speaking numbers so eventually we ended back on our original coach. We left Teguise to arrive at our first stop an Aloe Vera sales pitch, not impressed! We finally arrived at the caves after 3.5 hours on the road! The rest of the day was good but rushed.

Guide was awful. Worse trip ever. It should be clear that this trip is not suitable for toddlers and small children. Pick up at 8:30 -no stop for coffee/toilets till 2pm. Aggressive guide shouting and giving us a lecture on social media for under 25s. No itinerary shared. Food inedible at lunch. Long journey due to swap over of customers taking over an hour -APPALLING will be advising on social media NOT to go on this trip.

Next, we'll cut through dramatic volcanic landscapes to the Mirador del Rio – another Manrique masterpiece.
